Title: Possible tomato swap.
Post by: Jeannine on March 08, 2008, 17:59:07
I am considering organising  a tomato swap.

Anyone interested?

Please read instructions before joining.

You will pack your tomato seeds in packets of ten, clearly mark which variety, wether home saved or store bought and the year of their birth.Packets don't need to be all different, but it makes for a better swap the more varieties we have.

You will then post your tomato packages to me.

You will enclose a large SAE  envelope with a big 2nd class stamp on.(or  a 1st if you prefer)

You will receive back the same amount that you send BUT they will be different varieties, so your own seed collection will increase.

If you send 3 packs you will get 3 packs , it you send 10 you will receive 10 etc.

If you have extra seeds that you don't want swaps for they can be included and shared out with the other participants, but they must be clearly marked SPARES.

I have done this before and it works very well.

I may do it with other seeds if this one is well received.

eg. chillies, beans, squash etc.

Please let me know if you are interested.

Overseas please PM me re postage, we can figure something out.

Oh I like this idea :D ...  it keeps postage down to a minimum ... ;D

Would we be able a request ... if possible ... the type we are looking for ??  i.e. beef or cherry, stripped or out door types ?  :)

yes, you are right about postage, it costs so much less to post so much more seed!!

Hi, it can get very difficult for the organiser if there are too many restrictions as to type, variety etc. If everyone has the same request you can imagine the problems.

I think this is the first swap like this on A4A, if they were tons of participants in might be do-able but would not like to guarantee it as there are so many varieties.

This is one type of swap that really benefits from a lot of participants.

I have done it in North America but lots of people involved then.

Hi I have given this a lot of though overnight and feel it would be too difficult to try to sort out types etc for specific requests, if I tried and took out all the requests first, it would mean the others got was left,it might work out but I don't want it to seem unfair so........... I will go head and start taking names but without any  specifics.

For those who want to go ahead and have the fun of a surprise please PM me you names, addresses etc. I set up a file with these PM so really important.I also need a name with the addy, I don't mind if it is a made up one but I prefer to address to a name and address as I get proof of posting for all I send out.

So think about it and if you want to join in, let me know. There are no restrictions on numbers.

Look I am not trying to be rude here in fact I am trying very hard to be kind, you keep repeating yourself, you are now going all over the site pasting and copying the same message.

I think we have all got it.

You are making yourself look very silly now, the folks on this thread have done nothing to you, why break in on the thread just to bother them just to get at me.

As fast as one thread closes you start on an other, I am going to have to close this thread and  as it has lots if info about the tomato swap  going on it will confuse a lot of folks I think that is sad but I will not be responsible for that.

As far as it goes.I can't speak for anyone but me but personally I wouldn't have  cared if you  had posted on it providing you entered into the spirit of the forum and left the rest alone, of course without links for selling. This is an open forum, but there is an etiquette which I tried to explain to you in my very first post. I have since asked you to think about things from our point of view but you appear not to want to.

I am not going to talk  to you about this same thing again anymore on any post.

Tomato swap folks I think it best if I lock this post, we will start another thread shortly but the info is here if anyone else wants to join if please PM me in the usual way.

I will transfer the info on to the other one as soon as I can.

Sorry for the upheavel but I think it is best

Take care all,

XX Jeannine

I have a leaflet which explains size of letters, weight and postage costs etc.  I worked mine out to be 44p but as I only had 2nd class stamps (left from Christmas), I put two of these on each envelope.  Theoretically I have overpaid Royal Mail but I have a 10 mile return trip to the Post Office so have saved the money on petrol as well as my time!    ;D ;D

I had a 15 minute wait at the post office. 2 in front had several parcels each to send and the post lady likes to have a natter. I knew that the size of the envelope was okay - but not good at guessing the 5 mm thickness, and it was just over. The strange thing was even though I knew it was a bit thick and needed to be weighed the post lady demonstrated to me again that it wouldn't go through the sizer. Oh well looks like I have perfected vacant stare to a tee, I obviously need things explaining to me, carefully and slowly.  :-\

The last one arrived today, so I am all ready to go.

Before I finalise the packages some points:

I have had several spares sent and will add to them myself so that everybody gets at least three spares back is that OK? 2 people have said they don't want anything back for spares, can you let me know if anyones else would prefer not to get spares before I pack.

I have several types that I have a lot of, so fingers crossed it will work out without anyone getting back what they sent,  I wll swap with the spares of course if that looks likely, so if you get 2 packets of 5  stapled together instead of a ten that will be the reason why.

If I get down to spares that I can't give out without sending you something you sent in I will donate them to the Mental Health lottie here in Hull if that is OK.

I hope to have them all ready by this evening but will wait till I hear from you before adding the spares to your packets.

Not to bother about answering this question, it dawned on me after I posted the question that several folks are waiting to plant , so they have gone off, each with 3 spares and a few Giganteus beans from me.

I had to change some of the envelopes as they were a bit thin and  iffy with all the packets in and definately  not thick enough to take beans , you might  also find your postage has been changed, most  you remembered to put a large stamp on  your envelopes but a few forgot, such is human nature so some of them wouldn't have gone through if you put a small stamp on wether 1st or second class as they are too thick even without the beans so I have had to add stamps, one or two ended up with 2nd class as it was all I had left and wanted to pop them in the mailbox just by me rather than John driving to the post office. It takes a bit of getting used to but if the envelope goes over a certain thickness they charge you for the extra postage and £1 to collect it!! It makes no differnce to the post office of you put a 1st or 2nd class stamp on, if the envelope is thick it needs a" big stamp "on to get through their new regulations. The envelopes that have been changed are recycled padded ones and look a bit tatty but they will be fine, they won't burst.

So they are all on the way.

I was thrilled to bits to find two toms I have wanted for ages so I am more than happy.

Please let me know as they arrive

Hi, one was Santa Cris Kada, the other was Stoner Exhibition , I also took 4 fairly common ones that I simply didn't have  as I had used them all last year and hadn't re ordered.A San Marzano, Marmande, Taxi and just a couple of seeds of Myth as there were spares of that one.

Just in case anyone is wondering the number 1 most sent was Costoluto Fiorentino, closely followed by Cuor di Bue, then San Marzano and Marmande,oh and quite a good few of Principe Borghese.

There was a lot of multiples but I managed to give everyone a complete change.

I traded some spares for swaps as one person sent quite a lot of 3 kinds of spares that were nice.

If anyone wanted in one this and left it too late I would strongly suggest someone else doing it  after me as  it is a good way to increase your varieties.  I would participate if they do.It doesn't take a lot of work , not a lot of time really, we drew them out of a box like a raffle in order to be fair and checked against each persons list that they didn't send that type.

I am glad I did say no to choosing choices though , that would have been nearly impossible.

Watch for the postie folks

I can hear all the posties throughout the land quaking in their boots, as they face a day of mass attacks from A4A members desperate to get their hands on their packages ::)

I bet my postie will have his american football gear on when he arrives tomorrow ;D

Thanks Jeannine, you are a star for putting in all this effort for us.  :-*

Good job I didn't try to pack them yesterday boom boom!!

There were a lot of packages .. John had roped some fellas from the lottie in as well, so there was 23 of us all together.

I  got John to mention it in the rec room last week as I was hoping to get some seed from the old man on our lottie who has been saving the same seed for donkey's  years, he doesn't know what it is but it is a nice  basic looking medium size tom with a super taste that is usually loaded but the really good thing is he grows it outside and it never seems to succumb to anything but frost. He has promised me some but bless him he moves and thinks so slow I am not holding my breath. I will however beg a couple of toms at the end of the season.  I once said "you must call it something" and he said  " well me Dad never giv it a name!!" I suppose if I ever do get it I will have to call it Old Will's Dads.

So come on now you lot, WHO is going to do a  bean swap..

Woooh girls, slow down here, I have been ordering from this company for many years even before I came back here, in fact for the last 2 years I have done a group purchase for A4A folks,,,but,,,and here is the bad part, DEFRA is starting to stop packages when they come in as theroetically we can't bring toms from the US. I have only had 1 parcel stopped and it wasn't from this company, it was boxed rather than bubble wrapped which means it came via Parcelforce here rather than the postie and it is Parcelforce that are checking them.. I have had several shipments since my boxed parcel was stopped, all came in bubble wrapped envelopes. The man from DEFRA himself explanied to me on the phone that customs are getting tighter all the time and currently anything via Parcelforce can be checked if it says seeds on, he also told me that envelope mail isn't.

So it is do at your own risk I am afraid.

As for the company, they are excellent.Yes you can pay by plastic,  and they do sell large sizes, when we ordered for A4A wherever we could we ordered large sozes and shared them, everybody paid for a  30 seed packet but actually ended up with 60.

I want to look into the import regs to Holland, maybe Ruud could help me there as the Defra man hinted that they are more loose and then of course there is no restriction for someone posting from Holland to the UK. I have a son in Holland.

I do havea lot of there seeds but at the moment I am not sure if I will get anymore. Personally I would risk ordering for myself but I would not do a group order again.

There is a man on US e bay who is excellent by the way, I have shared his na,e here before and many have used him. He knows me quite well now, he always posts in bubble wrap envelopes. His prices are cheap and he has an excellent reputation.   Daves Seeds . He knows about the Defra thing and is very careful what he writes on the outside. His postage is practically nothing. He has many of the same seeds as tomatogrowers because they are one of his suppliers. Dave by the way sells all veggies not just toms. Check him out on US e bay, he takes Paypal.

So please be aware of the DEFRA thing beore you order.

There is a legal way round this by the way, you can get a sanitary certificate from the seller to satisfy DEFRA, costs about $50, no matter what the size of your shipment, some companies won't  do it as it involves a lot of paperwork, I ma not sure about tomatigrowers,,it is worth an ask as $50 is not much if split many ways.
Also check out seeds by size here in the UK, he has many of these toms, you can look at tomatogrowers pictures and see if seeeds by size have them.

I had an e mail from Dave yesterday as I had sent for some more seeds, he has been ill, in a lot of pain he can't get under control and struggling to keep up to date with his shipping. He has always been very rapid so I thought it very sad as he has been a super seller to me over the years. I don't know if he goes on forums but if you do Dave...get well soon, we need you.

Jeannine, thank you very much for organising the swap, it must have been a nightmare for you what with some people not putting on the correct postage and using too small an envelope.  I hope you didn't have to go to the sorting office and pay £1 postage charge for anyones package.

I expect when you received all the Costoluto Fiorentino you must have been wondering what to do with them as there was no point sending them back to those people who had sent them in.    ;D ;D ;D  I can see why spares would have come in handy but, unfortunately, I only had five packets that had enough to be able to send you ten seeds.

Thank you for the magic beans; I look forward to growing the beanstalk.  For the life of me I can't remember sending you a cow but I had probably had too many glasses of wine.   ;D ;D ;D

Seriously Jeannine, thank you very much everything.  All the seeds I received are new to me.   :D

The beans were my treat, they are Gianteus, Gigandes,  whichever name you use in your part of the world, this is the bean that Supersprout got everyone excited about, not easy to find so I thought I would share a few around. There are lots of posts about them if you do a search, I believe Supersprout used the name Giganteus. Treat them as Runners as they grow tall and plant them as soon as you would normally plant your first runners, don't leave them to the back end of runner planting as they need a fair bit of time. There are also some special recipes on here and on the net for using them.

Sims girl, if you go to the beginning of this post it will tell you all about it, this one was a little differnt to some of the swaps going on just now, those are pass the parcel.

I don't know yet if a bean swap will go.

QuoteI had to change some of the envelopes as they were a bit thin and  iffy with all the packets in and definately  not thick enough to take beans , you might  also find your postage has been changed, most  you remembered to put a large stamp on  your envelopes but a few forgot, such is human nature so some of them wouldn't have gone through if you put a small stamp on wether 1st or second class as they are too thick even without the beans so I have had to add stamps, one or two ended up with 2nd class as it was all I had left and wanted to pop them in the mailbox just by me rather than John driving to the post office.

Oh no!!! I'm one of the guilty ones here!  ::)  First time I've done one of these swaps, and didn't realise I had to include a jiffy bag.  If I can send you something else Jeannine, or refund the postage, please let me know.

Oh eck, what a list.

Determinate or bush ones don't need pruning, all the others do

The  only determinate one you have is:

Oregon Spring, which is also a very early cold tolerant tomato

Among the others, those used for sauces, canning etc are

Pantano Romanesco, Scatalon.Olivade, both of the San Marzanos and Amish Paste. Some are plums and some are not, most can be used for fresh eating too.  Olivade is a hybrid.

Yellow Pear is a real toughie tomato, very prolific, big sprawling vine, very old variety,

Gardeners Delight, cherry, OK outside or in.

Alicante happy outside or in

Olivade happy outside or in

Cherokee Choclate and Black brandywine, big beautiful  very dark red , beefsteak type, super flavour

Tigerell,a small, streaky bicolour AKA Mr Stripey,,great flavour

Coure di Bue, Oxheart tom

I think that covers them all very basically.

Don't bother pruning any tom you grow outdoors. The reason is, they have a shorter season, and you want all the toms you can get off them. If you don't prune the indeterminate ones, you get more but smaller fruit.
