Title: on the bright side...
Post by: aquilegia on July 15, 2004, 13:33:43
I had a major harvest last night:

About 40 carrots (my first ever). They are the carrotiest carrots I've ever eaten - tasty so yummy raw!

five florence fennel

six beetroot

three bulbs of garlic

I prepared them to do roasted veg with pasta.

But - there wasn't enough.

You see the longest carrots were a couple of inches long (my thinnings - I sowed way too thick!)

the fennel had bolted so I cut it off to use the tiny bulbs. (half of it is as yet unbolted)

the beetroot were radish sized

the garlic bulbs were to my delight proper bulbs with lots of individual cloves, but they were tiny. I know I should've left them in a bit longer, but a girl gets inpatient, you know!

We will have it for dinner tomorrow instead with the addition of a shop-bought squash.

have you seen the price of 'baby veg' in the supermarkets - they are four times the price of standard size.  As well as sweeter, prettier, quicker to cook - you're not growing small veg, you're growing posh veg!
