Sky have a news item this morning saying 80 mph wind predicted for sunday night and advising people to stay indoors. :o
Read what Metcheck's got to say about it! I hope they're wrong!
oh heack the husbands flying back to the UK from Denmark on sunday!!
I just spent an hour the other day finding all the stuff that had blown off my allotment and fixing the stuff squashed by other things landing on them from last weekend. A least the new sections of garden fence are now in so the old one won't be blowing around the garden ( except that I've keep the old panels to use at the allotment so I will have to anchor them down somehow!).
oops, we have been expecting the 30 odd year old wooden greenhouse to fall for the last few years, this could cream it, bless it it seems determined to stay up though.
XX Jeannine
Where we are (NE England) we're getting more than a bit fed up with these regular bloomin' typhoons! They are the reason the poly cover on my lottie greenhouse is now in the bin.
I shan't be going out on Sunday night, but it might take more than 80mph winds to keep OH home from the pub. ;)
Well that should see off the torn cover on the Poly!
:-[
My lottie greenhouse has finally succmbed. It's a makeshift job put up by the former holder- lots of old window frames etc. Went down yesterday to find a couple of broken panes and some of the roof missing. Not sure if it was the earthquake or the wind.
And we'll be driving home over the Pennines on Sunday evening. :(
Toot your car horn and i will wave as you drive through

More worried about other things in my garden. The greenhouse (touch wood) has withstood most storms since it was built. The real danger to it would be either the wind getting inside it and blowing the glass out or something blowing into or onto it (see below!)
The real danger of damage in out garden is either a fence blowing down, which since we have recently gotten the garden straightened out after the last section of fence blew down, would be very annoying. Worse would be a part or whole of one of the old pines at the top of our garden coming down. Every bad storm I worry about them, but until now they have withstood the winds well. However with these storms getting more and more common, each one must weaken them a bit. The next one could well be the 'straw that breaks the camels' back' as it were. Wonderfull. >:(
If its as bad as they say it will be (and some say it could be as bad as 1987), anything could happen. ::)
I'm in Leeds and I'm wondering whether to take down the plastic greenhouse. It's pretty well tethered to a wall and hasn't shifted much in the previous gales.
HHHmmmmm shall I risk it?
I dunno, it could be pretty bad. You MAY not have as bad in Leeds as the south. I tend not to argue with Mother Nature.....she's much stronger than us, and plastic greenhouses :-\
The wind is picking up already. I'll leave it until tomorrow and move all the pots into the shed and take the cover off.
A little effort to save it has got to be worth it. I'd hate to lose it so early in the season. Thanks for pursuading me. x
I have just been looking out at the garden and wondering what I need to do tomorrow to prepare for the big storm. My only real causes of concern are my mini greenhouse, which does have some hefty concrete blocks in the bottom of it after being blown over in a previous storm, and my cold frames. One hasnt got lids on at the moment but is quite light weght. The other is a solid wooden one with polycarb glazing and is in a sheltered spot, however I cant remove the lid. I guess all i can do with that is put some bricks on it and hope forn the best.
I dont think there is anything else to worry about, except potted plants but none are in exposed positions and if they blow over its just bad luck. I have little space under cover to store things away so its going to be a case of anchor things down as best as possible or hope they are sturdy/heavy enough not to be blown about.
It has been very windy here in Hull already, we went to the lottie today and had 1 pane of glass from 1 greenhouse out and the old one had about 4. It will come down now I am sure, I just don't want to lost the others.
All out 100 foot long plastic covers had moved over to one side along with the stuff holding them down. Fingers crossed for them too. It was too windy today to try to move them.

I cannot believe what is coming. It is a lovely evening here in Dorset. No wind, fer clouds and I can hear a blackbird outside singing.
And yet armagedon (or so they say) is not far away. Incredible!
??? Ohhhh dear the weather sounds horrific!! I am must admit I am also very worried about my greenhouse.... my husband tells me not to worry everything will be okay, but I am not so sure what with the high winds and hailstorms forecast!! Guess we just have to sit tight and hope for the best......
We went back to the lottie today and removed the old rickety greenhouse before it blew all over the lottie, It was held together with silicone I think LOL
XX Jeannine
Good luck to you all
Not much wind here at all in the North East - for now...
Was much worse a few weeks ago -lost my old wooden greenhouse. Made one hell of a noise as it fell over according to one bystander!
Not sure how the rest of the country is fairing, but the winds have been pretty wild here since January really. Can't remember it being so bad - well maybe I can, but not this consistent at least

Yes hes on the plane as we speak ;) and i am sitting in copenhagen with my laptop an coffee. Sorry to hear that the weather is not good. Had a couple of MM of snow here this week but its nice and crisp. I will check my lotty on friday when i am back lucky i ran out of time and did not take the bracing bars off my shed and had not had time to put the greenhouse up yet.
I've just driven from Brum to Newbury - and the weather was fine all the way. Worringly the temp was around 3 degC most of the way though.. It was clear all the way over on the my flight from Belfast to Brum aswell - perhaps there could be more snow then predicted...
:) So far weather ok.... (is this the calm before the storm!!) Must say we have had a great deal of windy weather to deal with of late.... experienced quite high winds during last week... no damage then, just had to collect a few odds and sods that had blown around ..... Hope everyone will be okay!!
Monday morning - how is everyone? Everything still ok? ???
very windy here in sussex..... going to get worse later when direction of wind changes its coming straight off sea at mo, no damage in garden at the mo, don't no about lotty won't go down till weather is calmer. hoping and fingers crossed. good luck all. mpg
Wet and Windy in York :(
Hope everyone is ok and greenhouses etc still in one piece.
Debs :)
terrible weather here in bedfordshire.
I am so pleased that i tied everything down that moved.
Greenhouse looks ok so far. But believe its going to get worse before the calm.
Hope everyone else is ok?? Esp those at the coastal areas.
:)
Relatively quiet down here in Barry, but apparently it's going to hit us about midday, thankfully nothing up lottie that could be damaged, shed seems quite sturdy - course now I've said that........ :o but nothing I can do about it. Weighted down what I can in garden, but I'm expecting some damage to pots. Good luck to everyone.
lots of people without power down south so maybe they can't post what the weather's like, hope they're all okay :)
Very windy with driving rain here - Southend seafront being battered by gusts of 50+mph. They say it is going to calm down a bit then get bad again!
It is wet in mid wales today after a nice sunny weekend, no wind last night & only 6mph winds forcast for today. I guess the storms gone down south instead.
Wet here in south Yorks ..Slight wind but nothing too bad.
Had a very bad nights sleep on the south coast! (Portsmouth). The noise was amazing at times
Woke up at my girlfriends to find that her heavy sun lounger/hammock had been tossed upside down and has lost its seat part. Got in my car to find that a big branch had landed on the ground about 1 foot from the car!
Lots and lots of 'debris' in the streets as I drove her to work - leaves, branches, bin bags, bins! The sea was very rough too.
Not had a chance to get up the allotment yet, but went down yesterday and tied down anything that moves.
Fingers crossed that it all still there...
Here in Nantes we had terrific winds this morning, our famous bridge over the Loire was closed and traffic was pretty chaotic. Seems to have calmed now but there will be a fair bit of rain methinks.
NOW i feel vindicated in having been lazy and not put up my polytunnel ;D it was surely a sign from the gods to wait another week...
Still here (just). What a night! Kept me awake most of the night so feeling a bit rough this morning (LOL). My bedroom window faces the direction the weather was coming from so got all the noise of the wind and rain lashing at the window.
Garden seems ok (surprisingly). Worst damage was to the old section of fence near the top of the garden, where 2 panels have partly blown out but should be repairable. The hedge on the other side of the garden is looking a bit drunken but should be OK as there isnt any actual stem damage. The greenhouse is A1, no glazing out or anything. Same for the trees, not even any branches down that i can see, which is surprising as they usualy shed some debris in even moderate winds.
I find the effects of high winds on the garden quite fascinating. Things you might think would be damaged or affected by it can be untouched, while things you least expect can take a battering. Very strange.
I put the lack of real damage down partly to luck and partly to good preparation. I spent yesterday morning going around moving or securing items thayt migh cause a problem. These werent things I was nessesarily worried about loosing or being damaged themselves but more the effect on more valuable things if they were picked up and blown around. I think this is the greater danger in windy weather than damage caused directly by the wind.
I was particularly pleased i moved my mini greenhouse from its usual home up close to the proper greenhouse to just outside the back door. One of the damaged fence panels was right next to where i had the mini greenhouse positioned, so i may have lost the 'mini' if I had left it where it was.
Windy and wet in South West Essex - but not dramatically so. I don't know if it's due to get worse. Roads into work were horrendous because the Dartford bridge was closed and all the traffic was trailing as far as the M25 in Essex!
Last time we had bad winds, it blew down the power lines where I work and everything went off and I had to go home so keep your fingers crossed it happens again lolol.
Hope everybody is ok and not suffering too much damage :)

Not too bad, could be worse, stuck at home as they cancelled my ferry
Wet and windy in SW Wiltshire, but have seen much worse. Greenhouse still standing, but bird feeder badly beaten about, bird boxes still up where they belong, and rickety fence in need of tying down. The ground is so soggy, though, as if it had rained for days (and it only chucked it down for a few hours) - won't do any digging today.
Apparently, parts of SW Cornwall are still without power, and friends down there had some damage to greenhouse and shed. They still managed to get to work, and even caught a ferry (across the Fal).
When is it going to turn nice again? Anyone got any predictions for Easter?

A forecast i have seen is for it to turn colder once this storm front has passed through. Snow for Easter anyone?
Strong winds in Cambridgeshire along with rain. Rain has now stopped but wind still remains strong. Can't see any damage in the garden. I am reluctant to walk up garden to check greenhouse as the last time we had high winds I walked up garden and just missed being "sliced" by glass which was blown out of the greenhouse straight down the garden.
Stay safe peeps.
I'm about 400m from the beach and the rain and wind gusts have been pretty bad at times. The three fruit trees with fleece protection were blown over (they'll stay that way till the storms have passed), The other container trees are okay. I was surprised to see my Lidl cloche is still intact, maybe because of the perforated plastic? Otherwise just a day to stay indoors - I HATE windy weather >:(.
Tricia
The wind seems to be picking up in Essex as well - the garden is full of flying recyling - hope the shed down the lottie is OK.
I was going to try to fit in a couple of hours this afternoon, but it's so horrible out I think I'll stay in the warm and plant some tomato seeds later.
Ann
Just a wet day here in the scottish borders. No wind for once although I get it 300 days a year at least. We are to get the next front moving over on Wednesday.
We moved the shelving and all the trays of seedlings from the lottie greenhouse and brought them home yesterday, so the hallway now looks like Kew Gardens!! The financial adviser is coming this afternoon, how am I going to explain that to him!! We tied the greenhouse down (and around) with rope yesterday and put anything in pots into the shed. Popped down the lottie quickly this morning, all OK so far. Good luck everyone.
Weed-Digga
too late - the door and 2 more panes went last week in the winds.
Blummin' B&Q do not sell replacement panes for their greenhouses so now I have to source a glazier. What faff! :(
Well no damage but it's getting pretty bad down here now. Was rocking my car earlier on. Think I'll just stay safe n sound indoors :(
:-\ So far not to bad here in Warwickshire.. we have experienced lashings of wind and rain, but nothing as bad as we thought we were going to get... Just looked at an update on AccuWeather and seems that we could have winds up to 74km/h on Wednesday so guess we still have to hold our breath for a wee bit longer and hope the greenhouse will continue to survive!!
Hope others on the forum are coping OK, especially those near coastal areas where I gather the weather is awful!! Thinking of you all!!! xxx

Got a bit rough for a while down here.

Thinking of you all in the rough areas, wet and windy in Hull but OK. Stay safe everyone XX Jeannine
:o Is that real ACE? Poor cow :'(
Same as Warks really, very calm about 4pm, even walked the dogs in the woods. The wind last night was very loud and blustery, thankfully nowhere near as bad as forecast.
I heard we're going to back down to -1 at the weekend again ::)
Aromatic........where are you all getting these cool cows and flowers from?
were pretty much ok in birmingham wind was bad last night but i had the window on the lock but open a wee bit if that makes sense? and had my sickly child in bed with us so it wouldve and did sound 10x worse (but she had a temp so froze we were, lol!) i really want to go check the lottie 2morrow but if its meant 2 go cold and then wednesday bad again i dont think im going 2 manage it :S theres a few kids bits in a fairly sheltered spot that i want 2 move into the compo bins... the oh thinks im being silly but i guess if theyre gone theyre gone?? shame it cant blow all the flippin couch grass away tho eh? would certainly save me a job or two! crumbs oh well, guess this is global "warming" at ita best, the seasons were off last yr too, really oddly warm early on, and now cold.... aparently its a long cold winter in thailand too... (a friends thai and her dads a farmer so guess hed kno!) dont kno what this is going 2 do to our crops etc! my conservatorys starting 2 look overrrun, i guess itll be growbag city soon if the weather doesnt cheer up!!
Well we seem to have come through today unscathed, except an epic journey to work!
I was worried that the polytunnel - a cheapy from Ebay - would be a crushed mangled wreck - but no, its still standing YAY
I hope everyone else is OK
:) Hi Star..... I also managed an hours walk with my dog this afternoon.... wish we had some woods we could walk in, but did enjoy a nice tramp through some very soggy fields today.... then of course ended up having to clean a very muddy dog!!
Star, I get the various pictures from this site: -

My god! here in Orgiva its blowing a gale!! greenhouse vent has blown off! can't sleep all the windows are rattling!!
:-\ Oh dear Biscombe.... its horrid I know when the wind disturbs you so much... my Mum puts in earplugs.. I usually put my head under the pillow... if I really cannot sleep then I make myself a hot milky drink, and then try and find something on the television to watch in the hope that it takes my mind off whats going on outside.. oh yes and turn the television up so you don't hear the wind and windows rattling... and hopefully either the wind will abate or you will be too tired soon to care and just go to sleep!! Will be thinking of you xxxxxx

I have just decided. I HATE fences, particularly those made of cheap interwoven panels than make the garden look like the inside of a packing crate.
Another lot gone, meaning more mess and more upheaval in the garden. Worse it was put up in the wrong place so will have to dig up a load of plants to make way for a new one. Great! Talk about history repeating itself one year on from the last fence fiasco. :o >:( >:( >:(
Ruddy weather, ruddy global warming etc etc etc....
Give me a nice stout hedge any day.
:-\ Oh Garden Apprentice you have my sympathies... what a pain in the rear for you.... I have to admit our garden is surrounded by hedges, a mixture of box and conifers.. My hubby and I started the box off in milk bottles 26 years ago and now a lovely established hedge, although the hedge cutting drives hubby mad at times, but put all cuttings through the shredder and into the composter so all very handy really. Guess you want some instant privacy so fences are great for that.... I live in a park home and the site does not allow wooden fences due to the potential fire hazard they create... so we are either allowed hedges or concrete fences...
We started off with hedges on both sides and a chain link fence along the bottom of the garden. However one side backs onto 3 seperate properties and as a result was very patchy and had suffered from neglect. One summer one of the neighbours decided to put up a fence on their side and without discussion with us. Consequently the fence was 'cheap and not so cheerfull' and since the old hedge remained in place was constructed on the wrong line (and not a straight one either). We then took down the old hedge on our side and replaced it eventualy with borders and a seating area. This is the section of fence that has been damage in the recent storms.
Another section of fence bordering a different property was built to replace the old hedge about 6 montha later but blew down 14 months ago. it was finaly replaced by a stronger closeboard fence last September. The opposite side borders one single property and still has its original hedge(loved by the local birds), although this has taken a battering and may not last much longer. Yet another fence is expected to eventualy replace it. :P ::)
Looks like I spoke too soon. This afternoon I found what used to be one of my greenhouses underneath a redwood tree which came down last night.
Not quite as bad as it sounds though after lots of frantic phonecalls I have arranged to borrow a 48bar chainsaw from a tree surgeon I know as my 18bar would struggle with the side branches never mind the trunk. I have also been in touch with the local saw mill who are going to send out a lorry next week to pick up the trunk & the straight bits of the thicker side branches. In return they are giving me enough treated western red cedar to build a new greenhouse all cut to size to make it simple. I have someone else who is going to come up with either a JCB or tractor to winch out the logs to somewhere the sawmill can get their lorry parked & then they are taking the smaller branches away to use as firewood. So in theory everything will be sorted by next week.
This sounds much more complicated now I have just read it back to myself.
WOW...and they talk about an ill wind.
