Title: LETTUCE
Post by: Rohaise on March 06, 2008, 20:19:50
I was wondering can I sow lettuce seed in between the onion sets I have planted ....I,m already running out of space ! or should they have their own bed .  I am going to sow "Little Gem"....are there any other types good for sowing now ....I really want to grow a good supply of mixed leaves for salads .         Thankyou     Rohaise

we've got little gem, lollo rosso, parella red and lots of chinese leaves, pak choi, red mustard, wong bok etc, growing in cells at the moment, they will be planted into spaces wherever we have them, plus radish and spring onons, hope that helps  :)

I grow much of my salads, all year round, in cheap window boxes or any other container that will take them - not only does this not take up precious ground space but i keep them away from slugs and things like that

I grow my lettuce between anything as long as there is enough space - even between the asparagus for my early crops. They are shallow rooting and not too hungry so don't interefere with much if the soil is fertile. Intercropping is a really good use of the space in your garden or plot.

It says here that you can, http://www.ghorganics.com/page2.html#ONIONS: (http://www.ghorganics.com/page2.html#ONIONS:) if you have room between the onions that is. I'm no expert but onions compete badly with weeds, so can an onion tell the difference between a weed and your lettuce? Some sort of additional feed might not go amiss. Good idea to plant a compact variety such as L gem though. Like calendula, I also grow leaves in a container, shoved anywhere it will fit.

Geoff.
