Title: The Little Red Hen
Post by: Ceri on July 14, 2004, 20:48:11
Went to the lottie this afternoon, harvested broad beans, potatoes, courgettes, onions along with lots of blackcurrants on the adjoining plot that I was pleaded with to take away.  Feasted away, made blackcurrant jam within an hour of picking (how fresh is that!).  Family adores fresh goodies but all have been utterly utterly unwilling to do any of the graft needed to produce them.

I reminded them all today of the Little Red Hen story.

Faces fell, and offers of help were made... we shall see!

It's hard when you don't get any help. How about encouraging them to help with the harvest, by making it a sort of competition? The one who picks the most of something gets a prize of some sort.

It's not the picking I'd like help with, its the digging, path-making, weeding - you know, all the really fun jobs before you can get the produce growing!

A few wafts of lovely lottie grown food past their noses and straight into my mouth alone may do the trick!

I empathise with you Ceri, as I have a seriously NGOH who will not set foot in lottie to help - it's no fun when all the donkey work is done by one person  :(.

Picked about 15 strawbs today and they were sweet and absolutely delish !!  but he didn't want any.

stubborn or what!!

Anyone got any ideas how to convert  an NGOH
(is it possible??)

I don't think there is any way Debs.
If your partner doesn't want to eat your garden fresh goodies, that would, for me, be much harder to take then him not participating in the work. Having others enjoy the stuff you grew and complimenting you on it is a wonderful feeling, even if you had to do all the work alone. Could it be that he's afraid that if he eats the stuff you grew, you will expect him to help with work too?
To each their own hobby but enjoying the results together would make up for lack of sharing the hard jobs to a large extent, in my view.
