Title: Planting Jerusalem artichokes - which way up ?
Post by: Riffster on March 03, 2008, 22:33:30
I'd thought I'd provide you all with a laugh this Monday night.

Given this picture of one of my many JA's to plant.  My question is this ?

Do I plant the roots down ? and that shoot like shoot thing will find the way to the surface ?

:-)

It doesn't matter. Just use a bulb planter. Take out a plug 6" deep drop the tuber into the bottom and replace the plug. Worked for me last year.
From 18 tubers in a 1.5mx1m bed I got 56lb or artichokes - shame we don't actually like them. Gave most away on freecycle.

I'll guarantee that if you plant it, it will grow. For the sake of kindness plant the budding shoot pointing upwards.

Those things are almost impossible to kill. Just put it in and it'll grow.

I'm trying to clear half a bed of them at the moment - we have 6ft x 3ft and I think we only need  3ft x 3ft - not expecting it to be easy  :D

Usually from a neighbour. Most people end up with a surplus.

Use the least knobbly ones as seed.

Mine are in a 4X1 bed and there are too many!
They grew over 10 feet last year and when I dug some today they are sprouting already. They were from Tesco, and just bunged in the ground.
