Title: Jiffy7's - Do you take the netting off when potting on?
Post by: Paulines7 on March 03, 2008, 14:44:29
I have just had a toenail removed so as I need to put my feet up all day I have been watching the repeats of Gardeners World.

A gardener in Kent (sorry, I didn't pick up on her name) was describing how she grows tomatoes.  She sows the seeds in jiffy7 pellets, then when they are big enough, she takes off the net surrounding the pellets before re-potting.  This year I have tomatoes, peppers and aubergines all growing in jiffy7's and I have re-potted a dozen or so into 3" pots.  However, I didn't remove the netting on mine as I was under the opinion that the roots grew through it.  Should I have removed the nets?  I would like to hear what everyone else does please.

Thank you Jeannine, I feel happier now.  I was wondering if I would have to re-pot them all again.  I was amazed that having put the seeds in the pellets the lady watered them from above.  When I did this to mine on my first attempts at sowing in Jiffy7's, I found the seeds all popped out again.  It does make you wonder if these TV personalities really are gardeners.   ::)

The toe is fine now thanks.  It was painful earlier when the anaesthetic wore off but it is all right now.  Hubbie keeps telling me off for using the computer when I should have the foot elevated so I had best get back in my recliner.    ;D

Ah right! Was reading the answer to this just a few mins ago when I was potting-on my tomatoes on the Sat.Gardening Supp....."remove the net once the roots have filled it - leaving the net on really holds them back - and plant out."

I used jiffy7s for the one-and-only time 3 years ago and didn't have great success with them, and I think this was the reason.

I could be wrong but I have used them for years and I have never taken the net off. There are original Jiffys and clones, I wonder if that makes a difference.

I brought a huge box from the US with me and used those up till last year when I had to start on the new box I bought late 2006, I didn't notice any difference, but I do know the first were genuine Jiffys as the box was marked as such, I don't know about the  Kay's ones. It doesn't say anything on the carton.

Interesting point though. I would kike ti hear others comments.

I watched that episode late last night. It was Sarah Raven. When she was heavy handedly watering I noticed seeds flowing out too. Can't stand the woman.
::)

Good Luck with your foot Pauline.
I had the same done last August, but I won't go into details  :'(  :-X  :'(

No, she watered the jiffy7's until they had swollen, then put the seeds in and then watered them all again from the top!  The seeds come out when watering from the top so I was surprised she did this.

No, Sarah Raven soaked the jiffys first but after she placed the seed on the top she over jealously watered them again and washed some of the seeds out.  ::)

......it was Sarah Raven who wrote the article in the DT Gardening Supp. & gave the advice I wrote above...... ::)

So you'll be leaving the nets on, then ;) ;D
