Title: Nero di toscana (italian black kale)
Post by: Suzanne on March 02, 2008, 21:52:41
i went up to the lottie today and my black kale which I have grown for the first time this year has put out flowering side shoots. Out of interest I have picked all these and had them for dinner tonight. What a revelation! They are better than the tenderstem broccoli I have been growing. I know I am probably the 1000th person to shout ureka, but this is as good as discovering the virtues of brussel sprout tops.  :o

Somehow I reckoned the pigeons didn't eat cavolo nero..

Mistake!

Bolting stable doors after the horse has legged it, our speciality...

I had heard that too, they left my kale alone but concentrated their efforts on my PSB... :-\
We ate all our kale before it had a chance to produce flowering side shoots....I will be growing more this year!

I still have kale left - curly, red and black and the black is just about going to seed but it won't be wasted, all gets eaten and it is lovely

Our measly two  PSB seem very late - one only sprouted in the last week and the other has so far only produced a central sprout, that I've removed pour encourager les autres - fingers crossed.

My nero di toscana started to go to seed and we ate them as well - stir fried with ginger and garlic - we enjoyed them as well. And to think that I nearly pulled them up!!
