Post by: glow777 on February 29, 2008, 20:37:32
help
My Chrysanthemums that i stored over winter had recently started sprouting however last week saw the temp get down to -9 and now my saved Chrysanthemums look dead. I have watered in the hope that they might bounce back but are they gonners! any advice and if I have to start again will seed grom plants make it to flower in the first year (if you can get seed)

bit of a bummer because I only saved the varieties that the wife liked (daisy ish looking flowers as opposed to pompoms)

That's not looking too good, Glow. Careful with the watering and keep them cool, not cold/warm and just possibly they'll bounce back.
What type are they and when did you take the cuttings?

as with all stuff that is passed down round here the types of flower have been lost years ago! I hadnt taken the cuttings yet I was talking about the stools, I will give them a little water and wrap them up with fleece and see what happens - and if not try to borrow some of the neighbours

Glow,

had same problem some years ago in Scotland (Bl**dy cold up there in the North East)

If you have the stools in pots, shake 'em out and box up in a 'deepish' wooden tray (old Tomato trays are ace). cover the stools with compost until just a wee bit of the old stalks are showing, give a 'tiny' bit of water, just a dampening, and place in a cold Greenhouse (or a cold Conservatory)

Mine came back to life in just a few weeks.

Down here in Lincolnshire we do not have that biting Arctic weather (we are on the West side of the Wolds and reasonably sheltered) last two Winters have left most of my Chrysanth stools in the ground, all are coming on fine just now, very short and sturdy new growth.

Put a few in the cold Greenhouse in December and they are o.k. but growth is a bit 'leggy' (which I shall prune back during April).

None of my plants are 'posh' or named, almost all are 'Pennines' and/or Sprays which I like for their clumps of flower rather than one or two big blooms.

A final point .... if you have the stools in Greenhouse or Concervatory keep a close eye for Botrytis (Grey Mould)

Good luck
