Title: Hi newbie here

Hi everyone, well we just got our allotment plot today, ooh the excitement LOL
Went to have a look at it and its not too bad it does need a good weeding but its got a shed on it, a waterbutt and we have some gorgeous views across the country side.  Said hello to a few allotment holders and they all seemed really nice.
I just can't wait for the weekend now.
We have been growing veg in our back garden for the past 4 years and its great, now we have the space to experiment a bit more.
Sorry I'm raving a bit too much arn't I

Quick question, do you leave any of your tools on your allotment?  Like I said we do have a shed which we could lock, I don't think vandalism is an issue but I still feel a bit uneasy leaving things of any value there.

Welcome GG,

I think a lot depends where you are, I wouldnt leave anything of value in a lottie shed. But others may have done and its been perfectly safe.

Best bet is ask your fellow allotmenteers about vandalism and theft.

Happy gardening ;D ;D

Welcome along.

Most people on allotments are nice.  Take time to get to know them.  I tend to adda bout an hour to the time I think a job will take, to allow for chats.  It's a good way of getting spare plants as well.

People leave tools on our allotments, but don't tend to lock sheds.  Locks seem to invite trouble.  As Star said, it's probably best to ask around.

Hi GG, well done, you've already done the hard bit and found this site which is full of lovely people who can give you really good advice.
We leave all our tools down the lottie, locked in our shed, I found it such a pain lugging them back and forth before we got the shed built. Having said that, I would, of course be gutted if they got stolen, we have had a few break-ins on the site, but it only seems to be rotavators that get pinched.

Thanks everyone, we will probably leave things like fork, watering can, the basic stuff down there.
With all the weeds down there we will need to lug a load of green sacks back to the car, so if we can leave some stuff there it will be less to lug back.

Why lug the weeds back to the car? If you pile them up they will eventually die off and then you can compost them in a year or so.

Hi Caroline are weeds okay to be composted I just worry that they will start sprouting again or I will just be adding the seeds back to the plot.

Hello & welcome.

We get odd bits of vandalism, but mainly it's mindless stuff. I've had the padlock ripped off my locker twice, but nothing inside touched. (Gardening tools, DIY stuff, a strimmer & a can of petrol!) Most of the folk with sheds don't bother to lock them, and plenty actually leave tools out.

You can compost annual weeds, but couch grass, dock, bindweed and all other perennials either burn or take away ;)
