Title: Best boy names?
Post by: OllieC on February 27, 2008, 09:20:16
Well, we have 5 weeks to go until the boy with no name is born. And we're still stuck for names... I wasn't allowed Dylan. Apparently it's not cool to name your kid after your favourite musician.

I asked for help on Facebook and friends suggestions are below. I have some very funny but essentially unhelpful friends! So, anyone have a favourite name that's not silly & not the same as everyone else?!?!

Louise says:
Chop

Theo says:
Jr.?
Son?
Widget?
Hot Black Desiato?
Conquestro the Destroyer of Worlds?

Now that last one's going to go down really well when the teachers call the register. I'm thinking that's the one to pick."

Katherine says:
I have friends who have just called their newborn Ossian. It was going to be Sorley, but after calling it that for a few days they decided that it didn't sound that great. Dave, my boyfriend, pointed out that it sounded like Soil-ey. Think that given the deluge of nappies this may have put them off. They're a bit Celtic Fringe. Having said that, I think that Somerled - as in the Lords of the Isles - is a great name. But do realise that it's not for everybody...

Bob will be simple for him to spell.

Lesley:
So baby names huh? I really love the name Edward or perhaps Henry (but that sounds odd with ****ie). More weird offerings from me would be Ivo or Jolyon - but they generally get laughed at."

Mary wrote on your Wall:

"peyton? miles? landon? maxigan?
or maybe add some punctuation. ad'm? mich-ael? marr...tin?
i'm sorry. i think our family has used up all of the normal boy's names"

Difficult. I sympathise with choosing boys names as we found it really difficult. Our son was actually unamed for 5 days after birth because OH and I could not agree! He liked a lot of unusual Celtic and some just plain weird names, we tried the making a list each idea then went through and crossed just about all each others suggested names out! A few I remember from our list.....

Otis
Lucas
Finn
Ulrich
Otto
Miles
Rufus

The only thing I would say is choose a name that sounds the same as it is spelt....otherwise the poor kid will spend his whole life explaining how it is spelt....... ;D

I see you have some Douglas Adams fans amongst your Facebook mates... ;D

Give him something that doesn't sound silly with your surname. Don't make it a joke I remember a Justin Casewell in a class at Uni when I was a teaching assitant, but there was another guy who felt his name was such a joke that he killed himself and left a note blaming his parents!

Choose a name that he can shorten and personalise when he's older, my son Iain is a bit peeved he can't do this when his brother Timothy can. Look at the list of top names and avoid the first 15 get him something a bit more unique....my son's go to a school of nearly 2000 and there are no other Iain's and only two other Tim's and they both like that.

Don't chose a silly name for a boy e.g. my niece called her son Jayden and I keep forgetting he's a boy!

If you like Bob Dylan there is always Robert or Allen...I quite like Dylan as a name though when shortened it's not so good.
I've got brother's called Gilbert, Roger and Valentine
Nephews called Francis, Dougal, Gerald, Campbell, Adrian and Aaron
and on my ex husbands side Dylan!
also some great nephews Abraham, Ethan and as I said before Jayden
I don't really recommend any of those I didn't choose them!
My son's second names are James and Christopher.....my younger son's name doesn't fit on forms....something else to consider!

Dunno about names, but as a family history searcher, I love it when people keep a family name going & add an unusual second name.  Makes them easy to find in the records!  ( although why I have a couple of Glassford Curries in the family is a complete mystery)

i like Harry and Charlie, but my mum always tells me you should name them Henry or Charles so they have a choice when they're older. i spose i can see her point, charlie is nice for a baby or a kid, but what if he grows up to be a lawyer etc etc? charles would be more suitable... i think that's her point anyway :s

you could go with oliver, ollie jr that's be great :) how posh! haha.

it took us about two weeks to name our first son Joshua so when number two was in utero we put up a notice in our kitchen inviting suggestions for names.  from this we found our next sons name Bramwell (shortened to Bram) which we knew was the name for him within an hour of his birth.

Yes I have an ancestor with the name 'Chicken' as a second name I assume it's come from a surname being included in the forename.

It can be a bit of a pain for girls, they can start off with a perfectly innocent name which on marriage can become a problem.

We chose classic names for our three that would fit in with what ever they did or where ever they went  - if that makes sense.
Also check what the initials will spell - my father was a clergyman and had to point out to one couple who wanted their child christened, that the baby's initials spelt P I G! He also was asked to christen a little girl called Daphne Rose Bush!

When I was born, many moons ago, my grandfather wanted me called Robin, my mother did not like the name as she thought it a feminine name. So she registered me as Robert but called me Robin when the family were around so as not to upset her father. All went well until the christening and all the family were there so she told the vicar my name was Robin, I was christened and called that forever after. I only use Robert on official  forms because they insist on the name thats on the birth certificate.

I think there should be a temporary name given until the child is old enough to chose their own.

I would have had Eric Bloodaxe.

Problem I had choosing names for my two boys, was that at the time I was a teacher. As well as trying to find a name that hubby and I agreed on, which was hard enough in itself, was the fact that I had taught a large number of shall we say 'difficult' boys, which had put me off loads of names!!!

For No.1 son I liked Benjamin, but hubby was against it, until a particular England rugby match in which both Benjamins in the team played really well!!! so that was sorted.

For No.2 son we again had trouble agreeing but eventually settled on William.

All was fine until someone mentioned, ooooh, it's Bill and Ben, flobba, dobba, etc!!!! Hubby nearly changed both names on the spot!!

Funny name stories.

I wanted to call my first born Candida...well I didn't know then what I know now!!

On one son we were really stuck,we were down to 5 choices and couldn't decide so we thought the baby could do it himself. We put the names on paper in a hat and popped the babies hand in, like babies do he grabbed on and pulled out Gareth, we heard a huge explosion of wind followed by a squelch as poop came running out of the leg of his nappy...we gave him another pick!!

We almost got a child at school called Cocky, and were all very relieved when his Mum took him to the other school.

Good luck,

XX Jeannine

Robert

What are the male names in your family - dad's, grandfather's etc.

Once I had started to delve into our family history, I discovered a whole range of names that we could have used - we all seem to have forgotten the tradition of using family names.

Sadly by the time I was interested in genealogy, the youngest was 4!

Here are the male names in our family:

Ian, Daniel, Peter, William, Kenneth, Philip, John, Henry (Harry), Thomas, Frederick, Zacharias (honest!)

Whatever you choose, think how it will sound with the surname and if in doubt listen to the Johnny Cash song - a boy name Sue.........

Best of luck

When you have to admit patients and get all their info etc. (Debster knows what I mean) It never ceases to amaze me just how many of the older generation were christened say, Herbert but..."People always call me Sid". You get their files sent up to the ward with them, and you have to ask what they like to be called as it's hardly ever what it says on the front of their notes. It's the same for women too. Very strange.  :o
Another thing that I find odd is why do people name their kids say, David Thomas, then call them by the second name? ::).
My friend Janice wanted a name that couldn't be shortened so she picked Mark, but what did the kids do? they added, and called him Marky  ;D

Check out this site for some suggestions

When choosing the offspring's name I wanted something that was a little unusual, wasn't after anyone in the family (and thus couldn't offend the 'other side') and would be based on someone fine, upstanding, law abiding and principled. During the awaited arrival, re-runs of the old black and white 'Untouchables' were showing on late night TV. That decided it - he was named Elliott... after Robert Stack.

As for unusual, I recall a nurse, on hearing that name so lovingly chosen, rolling her eyes and exclaiming "ANOTHER Elliott!!" Apparently there were five more in the hospital.

Some weeks earlier the movie ET had come out. Unusual? PAH!    >:(

I have only one son (and two daughters) and he is called Oran Henry John...  I like names that are a bit different but not outlandish.  They have a Irish surname so their names fit all right.  The girls are Sorcha Mary Jayne and Ceara Emily Jade.  The normal middle names (as well as being family names) are so they have a choice when they are older.

I called my eldest son Casey Lee, cause I was convinced he was a girl and the name was going to be cassandra lee, so we just shortned it, I love the name not very common at all.  My youngest son was called Mitchell, cause my maiden name was mitchell, and there are only girls in our family, so the name died the days we all married.  It was a way to carry on my family name and make my dad very proud.

We still have the baby name book we bought to help us choose, and the lists we made are still in it too, much to the hilarity of our kids! 'You were thinking of calling me WHAT!'....apparently I would have been called Stephen if I were a boy?!

We ended up with Alexandra Flora....I was really tempted to call her Flora (particularly because of the gardening connection!), but my nephew put me off when I was still pregnant by asking me what names we were thinking of, and then saying 'margarine...you can't call her that!' which put me off a bit. I still call her 'Flo sometimes!

Our son ended up as Cameron Duncan...eventually named by our GP, who was horrified we still hadn't named him when he did his postnatal visit at 5 days old. He went through our very short list of contenders, and he said he liked Cameron the best as he knew someone of that name who was a thoroughly nice chap....OK then! I think his name was quite appropriate as he was born with a broken nose, and the name Cameron means 'crooked nose'!

He would have been Tilda if he was a girl, I've always been a huge Tilda Swinton admirer, all those arty films I watched . My midwife friend who looked after me in labour hated it, and said she would refuse to put it on her name bands after the birth if we stuck with it!!

We named our first born Simon after a friend's little boy that we adored.  However, when we returned south from living in Scotland, Simon, who had picked up a Scottish accent, was called Haggis by his new schoolfriends.  This was shortened over the years to Hag though we still call him Simon.

I like the name Dylan as that is my grandson's name.  However, we have still found that people spelt his name wrong especially when he was at playgroup.  They used to put Dillon or Dylon on his drawings.

I think it is really important to get a first name that goes with the surname and to chose something that is not going to date over time.

It took us ages to name our son. I had a book of Welsh names. I had just finished a computing course and wrote something to compare OH's list of names with  mine. Wasn't sure it worked - no names in common after 15 apiece. After 20, we had a match then decided we didn't like it. We then settled on Osian. There is another Osian in his class, who was born 3 weeks before (his mother and I went to the aquanatal sessions but I didn't know what she named him).
Somewhere, I read that Brendan (?) meant - with stinking hair.
A cousin wanted to name her son Richard Edward.... However, she liked both names so he's called Richard Thomas (?) Edward .....

Sarah was Bramwell not the Bronte brother?

As a teacher I have come across Hazel Nutt and Val(erie) Garrity!!! So care is required.

My boys are James Lindsay (family name rather then first name) and he hates the Lindsay. Luckily his girlfriend is Norwegian and doesn't care!

Second son is Guy Maxwell - gets called MAx at home and Guy at work. He likes the separate personae.

I don't think it really matters that much - the child grows to fit the name...

My little lad (14 months) is Ethan Jack. Jack was probably our first choice initially but as soon as he was born, he just looked more like an Ethan somehow!..

A few people have said Ethan is a lovely (even biblical?) name - but I'm afraid I have to admit that I picked it as I'm a Mission Impossible fan!.. (Ethan Hunt - Tom Cruise's character).

I used to work in a jobcentre a few years back and we had an Axel Rose signing on and a Felix Fireball!

(both had changed their names by deedpole needless to say)

I also currently work with a scandinavian guy called Hans-Christian Andersen (yes really!)

You really have to be careful what you pick and think of all possible ways it can be read - i.e. I also work with a C Shaw

The worst potential would have to be Warwick Hunt?!...

I am afraid I like traditional names as well, James, Joseph, David, Charles etc. But also some that are old but become modern again like Noah, or have a twist like the polish spelling of Joseph - Josef. The Celtic names are good as well - Ioan, Connor, Cormac etc, and some of the bible names. Also sometimes nice to have name that can't be shortened.

My family seem to have a tradition of the older members being called by their middle names, rather than their first names - so important that this is a good alternative if needed. Personally I can't stand my middle name.

But a few suggestions:
Aaron (hebrew - light), Boyd (celtic - yellow), Christian (follower of christ), Dylan (the sea), Jakob/Jacob (hebrew - supplanter), Jude (hebrew - praise Jehovah), Lucas (Latin), Morgan (Welsh - sea dweller), Tobias (Hebrew - god is good).

But perhaps not Pugh  ;D

Look back in your family history sometimes some of the surnames make really interesting first or second names......though I'm not sure how my brother feels about having 'Stephenson' as a second name but it's nice because it's a memorial to my Dad's grandmother as it was her maiden name and he had it as a second name too.

My Dad's name was Samuel which is quite a nice name.

I found this site which might be helpful http://www.babynamesworld.com/

We did the family middle name thing too: it was originally my son's great-great-grandmother's maiden name, given to his grandfather as a middle name and borrowed by us to keep it going.

Has the great advantage of being a Mc, so if he grows up hating his first name, he can go by Mac!

(We can't talk - both of us use our middle names. Me because I loathe my first one and Sir because there were four of them in his class at nursery, and the name had two diminutives plus the full version, so one of them had to switch completely. )

My son (picture shown on the left) is Harvey William Marshall

Both first names are new to our families so we didn;t favour either the John's or the Robert's as neither were picked.

Harvey came from a really nice old chap we know who breeds goldfish and William from my budgerigar mentor who has now sadly past away.

In our family past we had 3 Josiah's, a William Cornelius and a Siviter! (Daughter has named her laptop after him cos she liked the name!)

If boys mine were going to be called Gregg (M-In-Laws maiden name) or Benjamin.......................as it turned out we got a Megan and Hannah, and they both suit their name! ;D ;D (though the Megan is cross with me as her Dad wanted to call her Roxanne, and she wishes I had let him, but the Police song was out at the time........................ ::) ::) ::) )

Has the great advantage of being a Mc, so if he grows up hating his first name, he can go by Mac!

That reminds me, my family surname began with 'Mc' and my Dad was always called Mac by his friends. We had a farm (in NZ) so we hardly ever went on holiday but when I was 6 I was taken on holiday for the first time and we seemed to drive all over the South island of NZ on it. We ended up down in the South in Otago and I knew my parents used to live there so I wasn't surprised that every where we stopped for Petrol etc my Dad was greeted with 'Hello Mac' and being 6 I wasn't surprised that everyone knew my Dad. It wasn't till I got older that I realised that it was because so many scottish people had settled in Scotland that 'Mac' was used instead of 'mate' to greet any male customer.
