Title: Leggy seedlings - Re-planting deeper in pots.
Post by: Paulines7 on February 26, 2008, 12:32:55
Many of my seedlings indoors have gone leggy and I need to pot them on.  I know that tomatoes can be planted a lot deeper when potting on and those I have transplanted are looking very good.   :D

However, I now have cucumbers, chillies, peppers, aubergines and okra in jiffy7's but they too are very leggy.  If I pot them up, can I cover most of the stems with compost or will they rot away?  I haven't had this problem in previous years because  there was more sunshine and I was probably a bit later with the sowing.  Your help in this matter is very much appreciated.

you can plant cucumbers so the top leaves are level with the soil, so i read last night, be interesting to see what other people think.

Once chillies have grown their second set of leaves you can plant them up to the first set. I'm pretty sure the same goes for tomatoes.

Actually I've planted them a bit deeper with no obvious ill effect  :)

I had only one tomato seedling that went leggy and the pots i have weren't quite deep enough. Sooooooooooooo. I added a loo roll tube in and popped the little darling in the middle. It's really happy now.

Thanks everyone for your helpful replies.  I will start re-potting them tomorrow though I may leave those that only have one set of leaves.
