Just wish i had a heated greenhouse, they are everywhere!!
I dont heat my greenhouse at all. Its in a sunny position and all my seedlings are in there doing really really well.
I check the temp at night and on frost it drops to a min of 4 degrees, but the seedlings are coping with that.
I just transplanted all my chillies into poly-pots, and most of them are dying. :(
So I shall have to re-sow the lot. >:(

What have you got in your greenhouse??
Is that 4 degrees Centigrade?
I should hope so Grannie!!

What have you got in your greenhouse??
Chillis, tomatos, leeks, onions, petunias, verbena, sapiglossis, dahlias, gosh, tons of seedings, thats a just some of them
ive kept my chillie and toms indoors at the moment, although i have taken some to my Dads heated greenhouse, but dont like to poke about in there too much as its only a month since he died, and dont want to move his things around that are happily growing still.
In my experience most Chillies get really unhappy below 5degC and frost exposure kills them pretty quickly.
Orozco seems a bit tougher but it comes from eastern europe
I don't have a greenhouse so have started toms & chillis inside - lots of them!!!
So far I have chillies, toms, flowers galore, cukes, melon, onions, cabbage, cauliflowers all happily growing away in my mostly unheated greenhouse. I have only put the heat on twice last week and that is all. Last year I think I coddled my seedlings way too much, 4 star accommodation they got ::). This year they are going to be roughing it. ::) A bit like a camping holiday, only under glass, not a heated luxury caravan holiday ;D
Thats interesting lauren s, did you germinate the melons indoors first though, before putting them in an unheated greenhouse?

Ditto. I planted early. Now I'm paying the price. It is seedling triage time now deciding which will live, which will die.
But it occurred to me: this is a form of Winter Entertainment for me watching seeds sprout. Whether they live or die it is more interesting than most entertainment and cheaper than the insane asylum. :D

Nope, they just came up on their own in the greenhouse. They were my own saved seed too, which is exciting.
My GH is frost free thanks to a small heater, but this only comes on below 5 deg C, so I'm trying a layer of sand in my electric propagator to try and keep the temperature steadier overnight as the outside temperature drops. We've had some pretty heavy frosts in the last few days, but it seems to be working so I'm going to try germinating a few seeds in it.
oh Bug***r it, ill stick some melons in the greenhouse then too lol.
I wont start to do any serious seed sowing until the second week in April (week 10)
Then my programme is;
Week 10; 34 varieties of various
Week 11; 11 varieties ditto
Week 12; 22 varieties ditto
Week 13; 38 varieties ditto
Week 14; 11 varieties ditto
Week 15; 21 varieties ditto
Week 16; 20 varieties ditto
Week 17; 20 varieties ditto
and thats not accounting for the Dahlia & Fuchsia cuttings I will take.
Then I have to prick out, harden off & plant everything including my onions, shallots & potatoes.
my onion seedlings need prickng out now, planted them on boxing day, and they seem to be better stronger seedlings in an unheated greenhouse.
we've got approx 30 small pots of chilli seedlings (about 4 in each pot) and the same of toms, sweet potato slips in jiffy sevens, globe artichokes, borage, chives, garlic chives, pinks, rocket, urrrrrm ooooh parsnips in toilet rolls, seed potatoes chitting, can't remember what else now! so yes we are also over run with seedlings indoors :D
I've got chillies and aubs on the windowsill, very yellow and etiolated since I've only just taken them off the hot water tank. Nothing else yet; the toms will be going in in a couple of weeks.
Chilliesand aubs on the bathroom window sill - no room for toothpaste etc - you have to prioritise!!!!!

;D ;D I like your priorities!
I just wish they'd got to the seedling stage. I have trays of chillis, peppers, aubergine and rhubarb. They are alternating between being in the bath and the bathroom windowsill (my boiler is in the bathroom so its the warmest room).
All I've got are 2 seedlings in the aubergine tray. One has leaves about 10 times the size of the other and I've got a suspicion that neither are actually aubergine.
My utility room is full of chitting potatoes.
Just made my 'rounds' exciting isn,t it!
on top of my fridge is full, my greenhouse is full, my landing and shelves are full, please hurry up summer time
Only about 20 of the 80 chilli seedlings survived. :(
It may be down to me adding too much blood & bone fertiliser to the compost.
I have now re-sown a load more.

Oh I got told to do it in decent compost. A quote from a chilli experts website:
Another black art during chile pepper growing is fertilizer. Most come with a mix of NPK which is nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium. Too much nitrogen and your plants will be all leaves and no fruit, not enough and your plants may be yellow and withered. But you don't need to worry about fertilizer if you don't want to. The correct balance of light, water are really all that the plant needs. As long as your soil is half way decent the plant will be able to get all the nutrients it needs from that.
I havent added any fertilizers to mine at all, and they are all doing well. Hope this helps.

I have Aubs and melons out at the moment. I used thoselittle peat pods (save time pricking out - and they seem to be doing well. Have taken them out of the propogator and put on bedroom windowsill this morning as although leaves are looking good they are a little pale.
Tomatoes put some tomato and chilli seeds in on Sunday night - so fingers crossed they will be OK. I had to cut down my choice to only 10 varieties (gnash!!) and I did water with Cheshnut solution (?) to avoid damping off.
Good luck with everyone's seedlings.
Jitterbug
When the seedlings like chillies, cucumbers, courgettes, tomotoes hae a few leave on them and getting big can I transfer them to the cold greenhouse from inside, or keep them in the warmth
i brought jiffy pots too, saves time, and you dont have to disturb the roots on things, they are a bit dearer though, but it saves wasting seedlings.

There are quite a few things that could cause the seedlings to die.
They'll still be very sensitive to temperature drops and they don't like to dry out or have very wet feet. Also when potting on try to avoid handling the stems.
For potting on I use ordinary compost mixed with perlite and vermiculite
We haven't made a proper start on sowing our seeds yet - it is too early. Have some peppers, tomatoes and sunflowers and sweetpeas growing, but the trouble is if you do them too early they just get leggy unless you do have a heated greenhouse. Always have to try and time things so once they are a reasonable size and I have repotted them once, then I can get them planted out at the lottie. busy_lizzie

I never add fertiliser to compost in fact I dilute multipurpose with sand to make the fertiliser content lower.
You have probably burned the fine root system.
Think of it this way..........seeds have no roots so how are they going to take up fertiliser??......when they have germinated and they have roots, you transplant them (prick out) into compost with fertiliser in.
See here as to how I do mine; http://tinyurl.com/y9coek
Um i have a 10 x 16 greenhouse full to over flowing, window sill in the lounge full and cuttings under lights in the kitchen, still not to bad they are not in the bath yet ;D ;D ;D
And i still have March seeds to go in :o
yep im over run too gonna have to put my poly greenhouse up this weekend lol ;D
oooh ooh ohh - the peppers, aubergines, leeks and rhubarb are starting to show. I think I can see one chilli starting to come too.
Its getting desperate now!! to much stuff nowhere to go!!! hurry up sunshine and heat!!! At least all this growing is keeping me off the fags!!!
I was starting to feel a little overwhelmed yesterday. Sunflower seedlings are taking over the house.
Uh oh - after having nothing, most of the peppers, chillis, aubergines and rhubarb have come through. Now I'm worried they are going to need potting on before I can put them outside!
My small greenhouse is stuffed with seedlings/plants!! can't really sow more now! only a few more weeks to wait before I can plant out!
we have had to put a 5 tier bookcase next to our patio doors, and it is completely full of chillis, tomatoes, cosmos and coriander. I think I started too early as some things are a bit leggy. I got too excited though and was desperate to start sowing!
Using a bookcase is a good idea. I was thinking about putting one up in the shed later in the summer. I'll need to have a bit of a clear out first though.
Just sown some carrots and put them in the coldframe. And have more leeks on the kitchen window sill.
I've potatoes in containers everywhere - the shed, plastic greenhouse, coldframe and porch. I've still more to plant but I've run out of space for the moment.
I'm going to ease off on the sowing for a couple of weeks now. Peas will go in the ground next - I'll waiting a week or so.
I have 3 trays of chillies in back room 3 in hall and 2 in lounge have mosty 100 per cent growing with 2 leaves on half of them are sweet peppers rest of them chillies peppers 3 differant tomatoes in polytunnel + lettuce girkins califlower in cabinate in big polytunnel + som flower seeds growing,we have a heated greenhouse at home but not alowed to put them in there, have orchids and drosera and nepthes in that, its full up anyhow so now room
Pauline :D :D
