Do you think if I saved some seeds from the pepper we have eaten tonight, they would germinate okay and grow into pepper plants that I would get a crop from this summer?
If yes, would I leave them on kitchen towel to dry out and then sow?

Why not! but they may be hybrid or crossed, nothing to loose, I would be tempted but I want to know what I'm getting from my plants!!
Whens the best time to sow my peppers
LOL Biscombe that's why I asked, I would like to know if I am going to get anything worthwhile too. I wondered if anyone had tried doing this. Everyone here is so enterprising and full of knowledge I thought for sure someone would have had a go.

You only need to dry out the seeds if you want to store them otherwise they can be planted direct in a pot. Fresh seed usually germinates fairly fast but you must accept that the resulting fruit may not be the same as the one just eaten.
my peppers have just germinated ;D
Thanks for that Eristic, so what can I expect other than the worst? The seeds will have come from a large orange pepper. I'd be glad for smaller green one's. I know the longer you leave peppers the colours change so wasn't after orange one's. Just thought it would save going to go and buy a new packet of seeds, as when I went to sow some, that I thought I had left over from last year the packet was empty.

My OH has done this lots of times and has a few on the go at the moment, they have always worked out just fine :) He uses starts them off over the radiator in old grape boxes and then moves them to the kitchen window sill once they are through.
The only problem with starting seed now is whether you have somewhere to keep the plants until it's warm enough for them to go outside.
does it have to be very hot to take them outside or just wait until the frost has gone
I won't sow mine for at least a month yet (mid march) and I wont plant them out under glass until around the end of May.
If I were to plant them outdoors I would be into June before I did that.
see 'sweet pepper' in my planner http://tinyurl.com/yv9u3h
I planted my seed in a propogator yesterday!
;D
how many plants do you recommend I sow, I have 4 different varities shoudl I do three of each, we eat peppers like there is no tomorrow
For cold 'house growing, I sow mine mid-March to mid April.

If you eat that many you should grow as many as you have room for. Any surplus can be frozen
I planted a few a couple of weeks ago .... nothing yet though... :(
Have just moved them into the bathroom which is warmer.
To go back to the "crossing" they often come true if they were grown commercially... ie a whole polytunnel of one variety... when saving seed growing in a block and ignoring the outer plants can have the desired effect...
