Title: Tomato-Piccolo
Post by: cleo on February 21, 2008, 16:25:35
Has anyone tried these? I met a professional `taster` for major supermarkets on holiday and he rates these.

He was kind enough to send me a couple of seeds to try(I hope they can deal with late sowing as I can`t see me about until mid April at the earliest)

At £3.45 for 14 seeds they had better be good. ;)

Actually it was fascinating talking to someone on the `other ` side. The tasters do try to encourage flavour but shape, shelf life and sugar content come first for supermarkets

I have been recommended the tomato variety called Tigerella or "Mr Stripey" which are supposed to be very sweet. Have got some seeds to try. Have not tried Piccolo though but if they come recommended......

Tigerella is OK,you could do worse. As I remember they were very much in demand after Conran used them at Chelsea-or is my brain as fuddled as my leg?

Steph, why can't you sow your seeds in peat pots before April? No probs doing it in your kitchen shoorly?

Mr. Stripeys are lovely, but lovely,  to look at, alfie, but for me the taste doesn't match up to their beauty :-\  Won't stop me growing just one plant tho.. :)

Hun-I can`t walk. We could set up a table but Jenny is too busy to pander to my base desires ;D. It`s not the sowing,it`s the pricking out and moving them, all the after care

Oh I ma so sorry to hear about your painful leg, that is miserable Cleo and I hope you get back on your feet as soon as you can.

Re the tomato, I have grown this one, it is an intense flavoured small tomato, about the size of a Cherry one.

It is a quick grower akin to Sungold for time  to maturity.

Hope that helps you XX Jeannine

What sort of tom are they. I've bought some of the toms from the co-op & they are lovely so I thought I would save some seeds. Only problem is I don't know how to look after them.
Janet.

I've eaten them - the ones I had were like a small cherry type tomato, flavour was sweet but not outstanding IMHO but I found the skins really tough - though maybe this is bred into them so they don't get damaged during transportation to the supermarkets, I don't know. I prefer a thinner skin.
