Title: Bed Orientation vs. Sun
Post by: PotterPerry on February 18, 2008, 19:45:24
I am new to Alottments and have just acquired an alotment 6.5m * 25m, that is south facing and longest along its east to west axis.  I want to put in a series of beds and I am not sure which way to orientate them?  At their longest should they run east to west or north to south?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks.

Does not matter which way you put your beds so long as the rows of plants run north-south. That way they all get an equal amount of sunshine along the rows as this goes east to west through the day. The other way some plants would get shaded. My guess is that the length of your plot goes east to west.

hiya, potterperry, welcome to the site..our beds go all ways, we just try to make sure the tall plants don't overshadow the things that need lots of light  ;D

Welcome to the site, PP.

If you plant in blocks, doesn't matter which way.  Remeber to put rows (like climbing beans) north-south and north of anything they will shadow.  :) :) :) :)

You know I dont think it matters - an allotent plot in the middle of an open space will clearly get the sun equally as it moves round.  I dont see why it matters which way a bed or row runs...  The only thing that would seem to be a problem is if you have some tall plants that block the sun for half the day, however, this could occur no matter which way your rows run..????
