Title: Cold calling
Post by: Doris_Pinks on July 12, 2004, 17:46:44
I had the final irritating sales call that made me find this today! (5 calls from overseas yesterday, and 3 today!)
So for all of you fed up of people trying to sell you stuff on the phone, usually, just when you are trying to eat, you may want to try this!

Doris, I signed up to the Telephone Preference Service a few years ago - what a life enhancer! If I want double glazing - I'll call them! Advise anyone to sign up to it, and apparently there's a mail version, which I must look up pronto! CLx

hi dp and cl :)
we're registered with the tps too, it cut our cold calls by 99.99%.
there is a mailing preference service, and one for faxes too, not sure about email.
however after nuisance calls at all times of night from someone known to us, we've a new ex-dir number, that's worked a treat. :D

I'm ex-dir finally as well - but my mother suffered   from cold calls before she did the tps thing.  Her way of amusing herself was as follows:
Kitchen/Window company ring,
"Oh yes, actually I'm thinking of getting a new kitchen/window, could you just hold on a second while I turn off a pan so I can talk to you properly."

She would then go and sit down and carry on with whatever she was doing leaving the line open.  Their phone bill and less irritation for her!

My mate had a call from a conservatory company and was asked wether he wanted one. He said sure I'll take your top of the line model, gave dimesion of the back of his "house". No payment taken, as payment on completion was there promise. Two week later it arrived flat packed and ready to be installed with the builders in tow. Only to find my mate lived in the 20th floor of a block of flats and they had to explain to there boss why they were returning with an £8000 custom made conservatory.

Now my mate isn't usually like this but it was the third call from the same company in two days so he thought what the heck. Strangley he's never had a phone call from any company ever again.

I once got 23 calls in one night from the same company offering the same thing. I got soooo fed up that I asked my daughter for her rape alarm and set it off right next to the phone the next time they called. Was never bothered again!!!

I signed up to TPS and now I simply don't get any more irratating calls.

Eileen.

Since most of the companys who "cold call" withold their number-i have my phone set not to receive these.I use NTL and is a simple matter of tapping a number into the phone and a recorded message tell you its been activated. This is a free service from NTL and i cant remeber the last time i got a phone call from someone trying to flog me something.I've tried ringing my own number and a message says "The person you are calling does not accept annonomous phone calls-please hang up and try again without witholding your number".

I know BT have this service as well, but there is a small charge with them.
