I was wondering if anyone had any spare tomotoe seeds the ones that you can buy on the vine from supermarkets. I would love to give them a try
Hello Caseylee, I saved some a few months ago after reading that you can put them on tissue paper and then plant them with the paper attached.
I sowed four just a week ago and they have all germinated already. I believe there are some still on the tissue in my stash of seeds but will check first before asking for your address. (They are downstairs and I am upstairs but not able to do stairs a lot (heart), just in case you think this is a weird response. :-[

For your information. If the supermarket toms are F1 hybrids, the seeds could very well germinate but may not be what you expected.

They could be anything and many of the seeds we regularly plant are like that.

Vine tomatoes in supermarkets are almost certainly F1. They need to have vines where the tomatoes are all the same size and at the same stage of development , neither of which are normal for non-hybrid varieties.
Hello to everyone - I hope this reply makes sense as it is my very first day on A 4 All !
I've planted several varieties of supermarket tomatoes and they are all doing extremely well. I simply squeezed fresh seed from a very ripe fresh tom onto compost and put the pot onto a window sill in a polythene bag. They germinated in double quick time and I've now potted them on and they are doing really well and look very robust. My farmer husband is interested to see what happens with them because of the hybrid issue. No problem for me though as they've cost me nothing and I've got several Franchi varieties as backup!
I've also planted some Spanish sweet red peppers in the same way and they have all germinated in a week.
Remains to be seen what happens with our "freebie" seeds but fingers crossed.

I do not know how they will turn out but i would think that given the supermarkets ability to destroy the small producer I wouldn't mind betting that you will get jack nuts off them that is of any use.

Real Seeds have lots of different tomatoes vine, bush etc & none of them are hybrids.
