Title: Help with leeks
Post by: caseylee on February 16, 2008, 18:55:25
how long does it roughly take for leeks to germinate in a cold greenhouse please.  I have planted mine in little seed trays but no sign of anything growing yet

At this time of year it could take up to 4 weeks depending where you live in the country. We are still getting heavy frost here in Teeside.

I'm in wiltshire and we are also getting frost at the mo, so I will check them every day.  What size do you recommend that I replant them into the allotment when they germinate

some people transplant them into loo roll insides, with an old tea bag at the bottom, that way, you can put the lot in the ground when you want to  :)

it's a bit early for leeks to be honest, next month would have been fine - I tx mine when they are just beginning to crowd out the trays I sowed them in, when they look like tiny chives, then you just dib a hole drop them in and water, nice and easy  :)

I transplant my leeks when they grow about 3-4 inches

I sowed some leeks in greenhouse early in january, i was growing impatient to get my first seeds sown but they are only just starting to come through now.  I am in county durham still frosty here.

I planted all my leeks in seed trays in January.  They now about 5cm tall.

I covered the tray in clingfilm till they sprouted through.  It seemed to have worked with my onions too.  I am in Bedfordshire and we are having bad frosts too at the moment.  They are in a cold plastic greenhouse, but it gets full sun all day and I have to make sure it doesnt get too warm in there at times.

Here is a good video on transplanting leeks by Steves Partridge, a member here.   Was really informative.  click on this link

I won't sow mine until April at the earliest.

Then they take about 10 days to germinate.

For that matter I haven't picked last years ones yet!

This was a picture taken two/three weeks ago and I have only picked about half a dozen since.
