Title: Paper Pots
Post by: annppayne on February 14, 2008, 21:19:35
I have seen a gadget which is a tool to make paper flower pots.    However this was expensive.   I have succeeded in making pots using a soup tin as a tool.

Just open up a newpaper (the size of Daily Mail) and  fold a double fold sheet into 3 lengthwise.   The width of the sheet should be the height of the tin plus about 1 and a half inches.    Roll the whole length of the newspaper around the tin quite loosely with the the extra 1 and half inches at the bottom.    Fold the paper over at the bottom  and seal with cellotape (or paste).     Then pull the paper pot off the tin and staple the outside edge and the inside edge.   This is gives it strength.

This makes an ideal pot which can be used to transplant seedlings into to grow on before taking them to my allotment which is very heavy clay.   I  dig a suitable size hole, water the hole and then put the paper pot and plant in without disturbing the roots.    Watering the hole will ensure that the paper will quickly rot down, having done the job.   Very similar to using toilet rolls for sweet peas.

Of course you can vary the size of the pot by using a different size tool.... spice pots will make a small pot for individual seeds.

We spend our sunday nights sitting on the sofa folding paper pots! much easier than wrapping round tins etc and fold nice and flat.  We just have a stash all ready in a drawer and used them for all sorts of things especially beans, peas etc anything really we can then just plonk them in at the plot when they are nice sturdy plants  :)

I cant remember who it was but someone on here posted step by step pics last year and we have been hooked on them since!

these paper pots are addictive, I have made so many in different sizes, what a excellant way to use newspaper.  I even planted my onios in them so I don't disturb the roots to much when I re plant them.
