Title: compost bin
Post by: caseylee on February 14, 2008, 19:29:22
I have been adding to my compost bins since lst summer, but have noticed thinck black liquid running out of it occasionaly. I have read up abit and it may be that ther is not the correct mix of things in there.  Has anyone one else has this issue and any ideas on how to resolve it.  Its very hard to empty my compost bin and repack it.

It sounds like you have too much green stuff in there and not enough brown, so the compost is too wet.  Despite what you say about the bin being hard to empty - and you might want to think in the longer term about getting one which gives you easier access - the solution is to mix the current mixture with more woody material or failing that shredded paper or cardboard.

thank you for that, I might have to get hubby to get out there and shovel it, when we put it down we did not have a greenhouse  an when the greenhouse was put in it gave limited space to get the the compost bin.  I am buying another one tomorrow so I might just swap them over and then mix in more brown stuff

You're welcome and good luck.  In my book there is little to beat successful composting - the ultimate in recycling and so satisfying.   ;D
