Title: Best breed for town garden?
Post by: Piran on February 11, 2008, 20:46:33
Hi all,

First post here.

Years ago as a lad I had a very nice flock of Marans. However I have now got a house in the town (still dreaming of my river cottage!), so am looking for a quiet breed of hen for eggs.

I'm planning to have a trio, handily one for each child. Originally I was going for a trio of the same breed, but I have thought of having individuals to get different egg colours. How placid are Aruncunas?

Cheers for any advice

Marans bantams are a nice friendly bird in my experience but for docility go for silkie bantams or pekins in different colours.

Thanks for the responses.

Pekings do tickle my fancy. Still got to persaude the kids to get rid of their playhouse, which of course they hardly use!

Recycle - Re-home. Perfect solution.

Firstly good luck...hens are such fun. A good all round egg layer with a lovely docile temperament is the Bluebelle. This is cross between a Rhode Island Red and a Maran.  Cheers Dinger
