Title: Fruit Supplier
Post by: splodge on February 07, 2008, 18:22:44
I am thinking of adding a fruit cage on my plot. Could any members recommend a reputable supplier/nursery. Mainly looking for soft fruit but have some space for a few fruit trees as well. As this is a bit more of a long term project than what I have grown in the past I want to get this right from the start.
Thanks
Splodge

I bought strawbs and rasps from Dobies last year and was really impressed with quallity right from the start. Fruit trees from Lidl and Homebase also good and blackcurrants from pound shop - all good but unknown variety.

Avoid Wyevales for fruit

Splonge, I guess my opinion is pretty biased. Have you had a look at Blackmoor Nurseries. We are a fruit specialist Nursery.

Just had a look on Ken Muirs site and also Blackmoors. I was looking for Raspberries. Only one variety on Ken muirs site and 5 canes for £12.24 inc p&p. Blackmoor had 11 varieties and for 10 canes for £13 inc p&p.
Am I missing something here !

Yes Splodge, you're missing out on the other recommendations - Dobies, Lidl, Homebase... oh, and Woolies and Wilkinsons do decent fruit also, and at very good prices

I see you're a newbie - welcome, hope you'll stick around and enjoy the forum.

Thanks Amazin, hopefully find some time this weekend to have a look around. I would like to say I think this site is brill, so much information and advice can be found very quickly. Think I will be around for a while.

I would also recommend Deacons for fruit trees if you want something a bit more unusual; they have a massive range of apples.

Have used all those named. Reads have a good range and are as helpful as Jon Munday's mob when called..

Both nurseries are efficient and competitively priced.

Marshalls seem to have delivery problems from time to time

I bought fruit trees from Bakker of Spalding who offer a 5 year guarantee. I am please with my purchases.  Carriage is a bit less than other suppliers as well. Only problem is some things are unknown varieties.

If you want unusual gooseberries try
www.cooltemperate.co.uk
or rougham nursery

Blackmoor have always answered my questions quickly and seem fine although I have ordered from them (yet).

I always thought they were dead easy and nearly bought some that were going cheap in Wilkinsons last year but resisted as I understand they need plenty of space which I don't have.  I think I would always try places like Aldo and Wilko first purely because of price.
