Well they had a good telling off today, i washed there sheds out this morning and Georgie porgie and one or two off his girls desided to shelter in nest boxes (Georgie thinks he's a girl!) truoble was they desided to pull every single drop of straw out off the nest boxes in two of the sheds, plus only got 5 eggs today,
Pauline ??? ??? ???
Mine have started to pull all the straw out of the nest boxes too - I think its because the batch of straw has too many seed heads in it.
At this time of year with the changing day length the birds often lay less (depending on age/breed). Usually they will pick up again as the days get longer...
Mine also pull fresh straw out all the time. It settles after a day or so
*tsk!* I thought it was only mine that emptied out their nest boxes!! I often get in on a morning to find minimal straw in the nestbox and the rest all over the floor! ::)
some of them are even sleeping in nest boxes so i have to clean them out most days,
Pauline
clever chooks its warmer in the nest boxes ha ha.
My tenagers ( pullets) pull all the straw out of the nest boxes and lay on the woodshavings. I dont think I am ever going to convince them to lay on straw.
The older hens will scratch around in new straw ( trying to find seed) and then leave it alone but its all in the nest box.
