Does it smell bad ?  If I put it on the garden will I get grief from the wife ?

Whether you get grief from the wife is a very open question... but it smells according to how rotted it is. Well rotted = a pleasant tickle of the olfactory organ... fresh can be very ammonia-ish and in the middle it's a lottery.

Then I would have to take her to the garden center difficult.
