Title: various lettuce seeds
Post by: debster on January 22, 2008, 20:42:03
I may the decision to not grow any lettuce in the garden, the rationale for this is that we dont eat massive amounts of it and tend to like the bags of mixed leaves we can buy for about a £1 only having a garden not a lottie means i need to choose carefully what i grow so therefore i have some lettuce seeds up for grabs they are;

little gem (about 2/3rds of a packet)
T & M all the year round lettuce (whole packet)
mixed salad leaves (part of a packet)
and an unknown variety (part of a packet)

Deb, you might want to think about mixing all your seeds together and sowing a baby leaves patch in a tub. I do this all the year round, they grow well and quick and you can trim them off with scissors when about 4 inches tall.They will re grow a couple of times.

Just a thought XX Jeannine

i have thought about that Jeannine but seriously for the amount of lettuce we eat i would rather use it for ve etc that i enjoy far more and this year i want to grow far more tomatoes, chillies and peppers plus my other container veg, so i am afraid that the lettuce has to go nice thought though  ;D

What about growing these cut and come again variety of salad leaves. Put one variety per plant pot on your patio:

Lettuce "Lollo Rossa"
Productive variety with deep red coloured frilly leaves.

Lettuce "Green Salad Bowl"
Light green lobed leaves.

It will reproduce in the same tubs all summer almost. Here is a link...
