I don't know what you mean by last year, but my late spring/early summer-sown kale gives me several cuts in the autumn, and then a couple more in late winter/early spring. It's very hardy! And very delicious...

Kale has been a staple in Ireland for a very long time.  I had never eaten it before moving here (never even saw it in the UK so go figure).

Personally I think kale has a much better flavour and texture than cabbage and is a hugely underrated vegetable...

I do not know the real recipe, but I use savoy cabbage, mashed spuds and onion all mashed together. I have never used kale in it, but it does sound better than savoy. I will use it next time as I grow curly kale in the flower beds as it looks good.

(Posh bubble and sqeak really)

If you ever make Colcannon, two things to note:

1) Use white pepper, not black when seasoning.

2) Please, please, please cook the onion soft.  There is nothing worse than crunchy onion in Colcannon...

Firstly it is the correct pepper to use (tradition and all that) and secondly, yes, it is also an aesthetic thing...
