Title: Can you transplant garlic?
Post by: BAK on January 20, 2008, 11:20:29
Our autumn-planted garlic has only recently started to show (about 50% of them).

As I am fairly certain that squirrels have taken a fair amount I would like to get some more going now just in case ... but I would prefer not to disturb the rows at the moment.

Can I put them in elsewhere and transplant them later, say in late March?

The few bits of info that I have come across on the web do not sound encouraging.

You could start some off in pots, but  it's likely that all your garlic will come through anyway. Mine are only now starting to show here and there, but this happens every year, and they always grow in the end, regular as clockwork.

If the waether is bad, I often start garlic off in modules, then transplant later.  I've never tried moving stuff already in the ground though.

it may be a long shot but i would give sowing some in toilet rolls filled with compost/soil a whirl and then planting out the whole lot
