Well at the start of last season we bought in bulk our Multipurpose
compost from B&Q which was the worst weve have since we started
our plot.
So i am looking for a few pointers to what i should go for this year.
Any recommendations ?
Bill......
we've bought a job lot of levington's compost this year, available to our members at 3.75 per 75 litre bag, supposed to be very good ;D
I find that the same varieties can change from year to year.
What I tend to do is look for a damaged bag and run my fingers through it and if I happy with it I buy if not I leave it alone.
Most composts were lousy last year. (There was a thread on it, but I can't do clever stuff & give you a link, like other folks can.)
B&Q came out well in the Gardening Which? trial this month. I only buy single bags until I find one I can trust. (And am very suspicious of these "3 for a fiver" offers.
Wickes 3 for £10 is a good soil conditioner.
Didn't think much of Westlands - dried out really quickly - even last year :o
I used Levingtons's mixed with some manure for my Tom's and Cuc's. Not the compo's fault that the toms were blighted tho.
I have now moved on to Horizon's organic compost, but yet to use it to raise seedlings.
Hope that helps a bit.
As has been already said, all types seemed to perform terribly last year - but later on in the year, there was a report into the terrible quality of the seeds we are supplied with, so I am not sure whether it is the compost or the seed that is at fault. As this got a lot of media coverage, I am hoping they will have upped their games this year.
As I posted elsewhere, & shown again here, B&Q came out way above most. At a price!
If anyone wants to be specific, I have the Which reports.
