Title: the wonders of freecycle
Post by: tartonterro on January 15, 2008, 20:12:18
if there is anyone on here not using freecycle then get signed up straight away - been thinking about getting myself a wheelbarrow for the back garden and allotment - but the price kept putting me off - so on the off chance i put a wanted mail on several local freecycle sites and within a day i had a reply from someone who had come across one, sorted it up and had it looking for a new home - so ive got a lovely brand new wheelbarrow and for nothing other than a message on freecyle - can you guess im over the moon lol ;D :D

That's brilliant! I've re-homed things through freecycle but also got loads of stuff from some WONDERFUL people, the best so far is a petrol mounfield mower that is only 2 years old!!

I agree that if anyone is not a member yet then they really should sign up, it's completley free and a fab way to stop landfill ............  www.freecycle.org

I have seen other people getting wonderful stuff though on this site and others!!!

I now have forgotten my sign in name or whatever - Now you have nudged me to re - sign up!

Thanks!

My brother-in-law got his lottie 6 months ago. Just got a greenhouse. 4x3ft. Its enough to get his seeds started, then 2 tomato & 2 cucumber plants in. I got him to register last week!

Seen loads of greenhouses advertised on our local one - but hubby won't let me have a second one in the garden. Not allowed any at the plot  :(

Our freecycle seems very busy from the emails, but I put lots on this week (turned out attic) and all I've had are people wanting stuff and not turning up to collect ::) Now all going to the charity shop tomorrow. Have had and given stuff in the past though. I find it difficult to take without giving a little thankyou so I have swapped for a bunch of flowers from the garden or some home made chutters in the past.

You're lucky if you can  get a greenhouse, Rob.  I managed to get one for a fellow allotmenteer last year but they didn't put it up >:(

I'll keep my eyes open for you - I can even deliver when my pickup comes back from the garage! :D

Old Bird - if you join the Torbay Freecycle Group you will find that there is an enormous amount of stuff wanted and offered every day  ;D.

I've found new homes for numerous items and was very pleased with the gas barbecue I managed to bring home last Spring.

Tricia - Many thanks you have motivated me again to get into the Freecycle thing again.  Got into my local one and it is heaps better than last time I looked!  Maybe I hit a dull time or something.

I have asked for a chicken house - you never know!  I could be lucky - will let you know.

Thanks for the inspiration!  I needed it!

I've got so fed up advertising stuff on Freecycle....not freecycles fault though it's really good. People email you and say they want something, you arrange a pick up time, often to suit them then they don't turn up and you never hear from them again.
I've just taken a never been used, in it's box still colour printer to the dump having advertised it about three times on freecycle and having the above happen.
However the guys at the dump, after an incredulous look when I said it had never been used, grabbed it and took it off to their shed.

Same here Kea. Taking a load to the charity shop now. Fed up with messing around. I had one chap ask which bus came past here, then after a long silence (in which he was obviously waiting for me to offer to deliver) he decided he wouldn't bother. ::)
But it does have it's good side.

Just missed out on a PS1 & PS2, the person was amazed at the response!
I guess I have been lucky, everything I have put on has been collected promptly!

Has anyone had experience in the South Birmingham area.  I am looking for a small rotavator.   Do you think I have any chance?

Well I stand corrected.  Freecycle is brilliant.  I joined both the Taunton and Torbay ones and I cannot stop all the emails that have flooded in!!!

I still haven't got what I am looking for - which is a chicken house - but the Council haven't said I can have one until their March meeting so plenty of time yet.  What an array of stuff there is though - magic.  I should think some people go and grab loads of stuff and then sell it on!

I haven't got the time unfortunately.  - I was offered four chickens though!

Chicken and egg time I think - Council first - house next then chooks.

Thanks for getting me back to Freecycle - certainly a brilliant site!

OH picking up a preserving pan for me on his way home tonight! ;D ;D
(mine sprung pinprick holes in it :o ???)
Wonder if I should put my old one on as say a planter! ;D

Glad you are back on Freecycle Old Bird, if nothing else reading what peeps are getting rid of is interesting! ;D ;D (bit like looking in the shopping trolley in front of yours and wondering what they are going to make! ;))

QuoteI cannot stop all the emails that have flooded in!!!

Actually you can!   I was overwhelmed by the number of mails I was getting, so I changed my settings.  I now only get mails from the admin, but I have to log onto the site to browse the new posts every so often.

On the subject of people 'winning' items but not collecting - I have read somewhere that some people operate an 'auto-reply' robot.  The program replies to every single add, allowing the user to pick and choose which items they want after they have won them.  Very much frowned upon by Freecycle as far as I can tell - hence the importance of reporting non collectors so they can be investigated after a few 'strikes'.

As for freecycle success stories,  I was the only bidder for 12 sacks of animal manure.  It turned out to be rabbit and gineau pig bedding (mostly hay with a few droppings), but im sure once it rots down it will be very useful.  I was not successful on the wheel barrow i expressed interest in :)

I found sources of both hops and manure on my local freecycle- I now go & collect hops whenever I want them.

Another thumbs up for supporting you local freecycle. I have just been given an allotment out of the blue after a 2 year wait (land in SE London is very rare!). Of course just after Christmas i didn't really have the money for tools so thought i would ask freecycle.

Got a few replies too and am now going to be picking up a fork, spade, extendable cutters, pots, and a propagator with temp control. I am very happy and get get digging at the weekend!

Well done Yahoo Groups!

Congratulations on getting you plot shaolin101.  I put some garden stuff on our local Freecycle yesterday and they were the first things to be requisitioned.  Long live Freecycle!
