Title: Over chitted potatoes - help please
Post by: Jitterbug on January 13, 2008, 17:59:57
Hi guys and gals

After reading an earlier posting about chitting potatoes last night I went to get mine out of the dark cupboard in which I had stored my saved seed potatoes from this year's crop.  I was absolutely devastated to find that most of them had sprouted long white tendrils.  I have rubbed them all off and put them in a light spot but was wondering the following:

Have they now used up all their energy/reserves and should I get new seed potatoes or can I just re-chit them and plant as per normal?  Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

To be honest, Jitterbug, I'd be very wary about using seed potatoes from last year's crop. Spuds seem to be the one thing that everybody warns you not to try to save seed from. However, I'm very far from expert, so I'll leave it to those with more experience on the board. As for re-chitting, I know that this has in the past worked fine, so all you can do is wait and see.

I've got away with it in the past, but with blight having been so prevalent last year, I definitly wouldn't try it this year.

I agree with Robert, its not worth it - better to get new seed potatoes and play safe

OK thanks guys, after the year I think that I am going to play it safe and get some new seed stock in.  Now when is the Potato Festival in Whitchurch happening ;D ;D ;D?

Well any excuse is better than none ::)

If last year’s plants were disease free then I would use last year’s saved tubers, they recommend buying new seed potatoes because they are certified disease free.
