Title: The Wonder of Woolies!!
Post by: Mammoth Onion on January 09, 2008, 23:28:09
Let out again today and popped into my local Woolworth's. Lot's of plants, seeds, shrubs etc.. half price, bogoffs or two for a pound. Bought some cranberry bushes for £3-49p and was tempted to try the pomegranate, might go back and read the label :) next time I'm in Leigh!!
Also had lots of small tool kits e. g. trowels, forks, dibbers, half price.

Brill! I knew they'd be getting their stuff in this week, as are most of our favourites: Wilkos, Pundstretcher/land/shop, 99p Stores, etc.

Pomegranate? Not seen that in Woolies before. I'm going shopping tomorrow...

I may be some time...

;D

How long does it take to fruit from seed?  I have seed for dwarf pomegranate and would be curious to know.

mine isn't likely to for a long time as I don't think its is warmth enough (north west) but I know others have - maybe do a search for previous threads if no-one gets back to you - they are nice shrubs though

I'm not surprised Woolies are selling stuff at half price, or even closing stores down. In the last 12 months their share price has dropped by more that 70%, from 34p to 10p.  They'll do anything to get shoppers into their stores.

Other store that are also having a bad time are :-

Dixons - drop of 65% in 12 months , and a particularly bad Christmas trading report
Currys - Drop of 50%, similar trading report - we're just not buying those bis screen TV's.
M&S     - Down 28% THIS WEEK alone (560p down to 400 !)

There should be some good bargains out there this spring.

Wish I had seen this thread before parting with 10 quid this morning. I visited my local garden centre and bought 3 packs of geranium, and 1 pack of petunia, and it amounted to £ 9:94p. One of the geranium pack cost me £3 and had only 10 seeds. I shan't make this mistake again.

Yes, I will miss this branch too, strange as the store was always busy.  Oh well...   >:(  I didn't have time to look today, but I'll take a look when I go past on Monday, but I too doubt they'll stock up with gardening stuff either.  We do have a Wilkinsons coming in a months time tho  ;D

Is that definite, Mat? I read it a while ago but couldn't see it on their website the other day.

Whereabouts in York are you, mat?

I'm not surprised Woolies have been suffering lately, ours used to be totally ace, you could spend hrs in there looking round & find almost anything you wanted, but now all they seem to bother about are mobile phones, computer games & dvds/cds.  Plus they've made the isles really skinny so it's a nightmare trying to navigate around it. It's really gone down in my estimation, but thankfully where i work there's a slightly larger one with the gardening stuff in x

You said it!

And another thing - how high the goods are stacked on the shelves. I was in Poundstretcher today (same company I believe) and they've done exactly the same. They've refitted with ceiling-high shelf units - one of which had just come away from it's fixings and collapsed.

Its been in the "Press" (so "must" be true?!) that it is definately closing, all stock will be sold off or tranferred back to depot and Woolies have blamed "Business Reasons".  There's a rumour by Boots staff that Boots are transferring there... But Boots will not confirm/deny...

I relocated here a year ago (new life, job, location, etc  ;D)  and LOVE it.  I was in the centre of York (near Fulford Road/Ouse) but moved to my house I bought last October.  I'll send you a personal mail through A4A re: my location.

The Woolies here has onion sets (Sturon & Red Baron) at £2.99 for 100, AND with a buy one get one free offer.
All the summer flowering bulbs and shrubs were on buy one get one free too.
Also saw pomegranate as mentioned earlier, and gooseberry, afraid didn't note the price, but did see peach, nectarine, apple, plum & pear trees at £9.99 each.

Big Woolies branch near me is just starting to get its goodies in. Today I saw the pomegranates  - priced at £5.99,  but when I took one to the till the assistant said they'd been marked down to £2.99 - so I nipped back sharpish and got another one! No fruit trees in yet - a few Rowans and a couple of Acers only, so far. Now, next door, in Wilkinsons...

;D

I've been into a couple of woolies this week and they are starting to get the plants and trees in. (Sheldon had fruit trees - mostly about a tenner). Picked up a pomegranate for £2.99 and 2 asparagus for £2.49.

Thanks for the info folks.  Been in today & picked up a covered poly shelf thingy to bring on my seeds & make use of the spae, half price and a gift box of Spear & Jackson hand fork, trowel & secateurs reduced from £20 to £6 - just what we need for leaving in the shed at the lottie.

Cheers

Caroline, I cannot reply to you personally, as I receive a message that your inbox is full.  Therefore...

... Yes, Woolies in York is definitely closing; there's posters in the window.  It's closing on January 19th.  Obviously there's no garden items in stock; in fact many shelves are now bare.  >:(

This will save you a trip!

Woolworths in Aberystwyth has got their half price plants in.
They have fruit trees, fruit bushes, onion & potato sets, aquatic plants, ornamental trees, shrubs, plants, bulbs. All seeds and gardening equipment is half price too.

I bought a tayberry, loganberry, cabernet sauvignon grape, white grape, 2 pomegranates & 6 'cambridge favourite' strawberries. For the fruit garden. I also bought a waterlily 'attraction', cattail, pickerel rush & black water iris for my ponds. That should keep me busy until Friday 25th when Lidl gets their fruit plants in.

Woolies in Wood Green now has its fruit trees in (average 4ft) for £9.99 plus you get a free Willow with each one.

But the best bargain I found today was the 30ft long rolls of velcro for tying in plants. Reduced from £2.99 to 75p. Ning nang noo.

;D

I have always noticed that our local Woolies was full of customers but they stopped selling seeds etc some time ago.  I was going to buy the shares because of the yield as they might be taken over. In any case I just can;t see them going down the tubes.

Florald, my nearest Woolies in Camden Town stopped selling gardening items two or three years ago, but the next nearest, in Kentish Town (just a couple of bus stops away) continued. When I asked they said it was a conscious decision to do this - there was no need for the space in both stores to be used for gardening goods, especially as the Camden branch is smaller.

I think ours is struggling  because of competition from the nearby Wilkinsons. Wilkinsons seems to be stocking similar but wider range of goods at even cheaper prices (and its a bigger shop compared to our Woolies). I used to go to woolies, but have swopped to Wilkos and I'm guessing others have done the same...

Those of you who have grown pomegranites - can you plant them outside or do you have to keep them in tubs inside?  And when you say you can grow from seed - can this be the seed from inside the fruits you buy - or do you have to buy the seeds special?  Like are the seeds in the fruit we eat too imature to grow and do the right seeds have to mature for ages on the tree?

I love Pommies.

My Woolies Ben Lomond is FABULOUS! Can't fault it - prolific fruiter, large fruits, easy to care for, in fact I've just bought another one - and a redcurrant too! Can't tell you much about the redcurrant yet (we can compare notes), but if it's half as good as the blackcurrant I'll be well pleased.

I grew Pomegranates from seed "JustVegging OUt"...  from what I remember the seeds were dry without the pulp... but fully ripened ones should have viable seed... I'd ferment the pulp off, it may inhibit the germination. Started mine in a cold greenhouse, brought them in for winter for about 5 years but don't bother anymore!

I grew mine from seed as well, just bunged 'em in some compost  ;D but they stay in the g/h over winter

I bought woolies blueberry £1.99 but then our local 'poundland store' had them in for, guess what  8) so I bought 2 more - can never have enough blueberries
