People were worrying about the late show of their Garlic.
Our 14 November planting is just showing.
that's about right, funny how plants know better than we do about what to do and when to do it :D
I'm delighted that mine have started to pop through. They were so much quicker last year, but I did plant them a bit deeper this season.
Oh yes yes yes!!!! me too Tim!
I just spotted them this morning when I took a big bag of scraps down for the compost, lots of shoots, about 2 cm high! I am so thrilled, because my garlic didn't really work last year and I overwintered this time to see if that was a better method.
I planted mine...let's see, look it up on blog... last weekend in October. So it has been in for 11 weeks. I hope that our cold December means that it will bulb correctly this time.
Little tender shoots are just the sweetest things in the garden, it's as if the seeds are saying"hey look at me, I made it" tee hee
Morning All, hope you all had a good christmas and new year.
We planted our garlic in nov , just 12 cloves in the garden to see how it would grow, it`s up to 7" and going like a bomb. Maybe living in s. devon helped it, or did we plant it too early?
I'm a little north of you GordonsVeg, up in Gloucester, and mine planted in a small bed against a high wall in early November are about the same size as yours. I'm taking that as a sign it's going to be a great crop rather than worrying about it being too early ;)
My only worry is that we only got a touch of frost in December and obviously none so far in January so I'm wondering just how much frost they need to 'bulb' and how early in their growth do they need it? Also, if they don't get it what happens? Do we end up with a big ball of solid garlic?
Questions, questions...
Hi,
I didn’t put mine in until Spring last year and they did OK small but perfectly usable. So they didn’t get any frost but still formed cloves.
So I don’t know if they really need frost to form cloves instead of one big bulb.
Sorry more questions than answers.
We put ours in sometime in november i think. :-\
They have all come through and are about 3-4inchs high
Debs
mine were through and thiving until my chickens escaped and dug em up.
Good news all round! (Well, apart from the chooks, of course!). Most of mine have an inch or two of nice, solid stem.
Is that the smell of "Special Garlic Chicken" you're cooking, gunner?!?!
no couldnt do that!! my 9 year old daughter is chicken carer and very attached to them!! one of my main jobs this year is to build a lightweight run for them so i can keep them contained, at the moment they free range around our garden, they have done well clearing the borders over the winter, but i need to get my garden/grass ready for spring!! and i cant with the hens on the rampage!!
Still no sign of mine (planted 1st Nov.) :(
I planted mine in Nov. Some varieties are showing and others are not yet. The elephant garlic is just through and I am hoping that we will get a good crop because of all of the frost.
Mine's all up! The elephant garlic looks particularly vigorous (insert bad pun here).
