Title: Best Method for Testing pH levels
Post by: Susiebelle on January 08, 2008, 14:22:43
I have 20 raised beds approx. growing size 20' x 4'. I have had to import soil from other areas of the Lotti as well as the other usual bits & bobs mainly horse manure, shredded paper, grass cuttings, home made compost, and a bit of horticultural grit thrown in for good measure. I think I need to test pH level  of each bed - don't I? don't think I can afford to send samples away so my question is:-
Is it worth investing in one of those metre things that you just prod the ground with or is it best to use those sample kits :-\ is one more accurate than the other? I would appreciate your thoughts, many thanks

I have one but rarely use it.

When I do I only use it as a guide  i.e. I don't take the reading as gospel.

It certainly will tell you if your soil is too alkaline or acid and that is near enough for me.

The plants will tell me the rest.

Edit; By the way ensure you clean it after each reading I use a brillo or nylon pot scourer to clean it.

Thanks |TeeGee I have been clearing my garage out and have found a soil testing kit so I think I may stick with this for 2008 and see what happens!

Kits are more accurate.
