Title: Alexanders
Post by: Rob08 on January 07, 2008, 11:14:48
Alexanders (Smyrnium olusatrum) is a naturalised plant in the United Kingdom that was apparently introduced by the Romans who enjoyed it as a vegetable.

Having read a bit about it  at http://www.tracingpaper.org.uk/2007/04/15/alexanders/ I was wondering if anyone here has tried it, and if so, how palatable did you find it?

Sounds like you'd harvest it in the same way as PSB, i.e. the stems and flower buds. I wouldn't mind trying it - celery and parsley are two of my favorites.

If you want to try it chiltern seeds (http://www.edirectory.co.uk/chilternseeds/pages/moreinfo.asp?pe=DBFBCIFIQ_+smyrnium+olusatrum&cid=211) sell it for £1.60 per pack.

Thanks, was just curious if anyone had tried it.  It sounds like a very viable vegetable actually, with the added advantage of growing through the winter (I like any crop that stands through winter).
