Title: Sweet blackcurrants
Post by: davholla on January 04, 2008, 16:06:25
What is the sweetest black currant that you can grow ?

I like the flavour of black currants but they are too sour I would like one that can be eaten without sugar.

Try leaving the fruit on the bush until it's soft, it becomes sweet and luscious.

So does variety x taste nicer if you grow it yourself rather than buying it ?

If which variety should x be ?

Agree with Jennym, leave them on the bush (caged) a little longer
A sunnier summer also helps the sweetness !
Wellington XXX is our favourite

I think my sweetest tasting blackcurrants are Ben Sarek, but not 100% sure. But there is definitely a huge difference in taste between shop bought and home grown.
The other thing that just sprang to mind, is that jostaberry might be an option for you. The berries are larger, and sweeter than blackcurrant when ripe, but not so "blackcurranty" in taste.
