Title: m26 Apple trees
Post by: davholla on December 28, 2007, 17:10:19
I planted 2 D'Arcy Spice and a family tree Jupite, Jester, Fiesta in March.

They were 2 year old bushes.

Could I get some apples next year ?

The D'Arcy Spice produced 4 of which 3 feel off and the other was not very nice :(

They could probably do with a prune sometime this winter.

There may be some pollination issues - the  family tree is group 2 whereas the Spice are in group 4 which is not that common, but with two I suppose they'll pollinate each other and the family tree will be self pollinating?

When the little apples form do prune some off at an early stage so that the tree doesn't try and produce too many. I've been reducing ours by one-third to a half and they're year 3.

Re D'Arcy Spice apple not having a very good taste, this variety is best harvested in October and the fruit stored until the end of December / early January before eating - the flavour is then much nicer.

Actually there was only one D'Arcy Spice sorry I mistyped it.
