Title: Honeydew melon
Post by: dtw on December 25, 2007, 09:18:16
Will they grow here (in the south)?
Do they need to be in a greenhouse?
When should I sow them?

Merry Christmas all.  :D

Theyy may grow in the south, depends on how good a summer and  we get but it is iffy. They really need the greenhouse, Also depends on the variety, short season ones are a better bet. If no greenhouse, start them the same time as you would your cucumbers.

I do grow quite a few melons but would not try outside in Hull, even in Canada where the weather was much warmer in BC and the growing season much longer it was a gamble. I did it there with success but picked the varieties very carefully.

Before I moved to Qatar last year, I had a plot in Harrow. I planted melons more in hope than expectation and had a brilliant crop.

I'm not sure they were Honeydews. I think they may have been Cantaloupes.

Give them a go. No harm in trying.

Meanwhile it's deep midwinter here (which is like summer in the UK) and my tomatoes and courgettes are doing me proud.

Making me jealous - would love to live in a country where you can plant year round. Can you grow in the summer when it gets to the high 30's and 40 degrees C of heat?
