Does anyone know how Shallots can be propagated? By this I mean increasing stock rather than simply cultivating. I know some bulbs can be increased by twin scaling but I am not sure whether this includes shallots.
I realise that by simply growing them and storing some for stock the following year is one option but wondered if twin scaling or some other method could be done to increase stock more quickly.
Any help would be gratefully received
Hi,well I don't know of any method to do what you describe,I think I would find it an unescessary time consuming exercise specially as shallot seed bulbs are sooo cheap at Wilko's prices ;)...Alan
could you explain twin scaling please?
Other than sets, I've only grown them from seed. = Tim
Thanks for your replies. The reason I am asking is because I am doing a horticulture course and the local library is useless.
I wondered whether there was another way of propagating as simply growing and storing and sowing seed seems too simple an answer. It is really a question about propagating from own stock.
Is this of any interest?? = Tim

Thanks for your reply. I have had a look at the site and it is quite useful. I am beginning to think that the only way to propagate is by growing and storing. Perhaps I am trying to make things more complicated than they actually are.
