Did anyone plant potatoes for Christmas?
I planted a large potato pot with 4 spuds in Spetember. They have just started growing, maybe now about an inch or two tall! Also I have 4 potatoes now growing in the bed where I must have missed when I dug them in the summer, they are about 5 inches tall.
I dont think any of them will be ready for Christmas though ::)
I had meant to do some...but I didnt get roundtoit >:( It will not be left next year. Im quite angry with myself....but you will enjoy some very earlies even if they're not quite ready for xmas.
Happy eating!
We haven't had any success in the beds with the second croppers, but this year I put five supermarket spuds which had started chitting into buckets in the polytunnel September and the haulms have just died down. We shall empty the buckets at christmas time (with some PFAs on standby just in case) and see what happens.
I'll be trial digging on the plot next to mine... given up... had some Sarpo put in late never came to much but worth a firkle.. just to stop volunteeers you understand!
;D
I did... I have literally just dug up the ones in the ground - have a mix of big to small new potatoes but enough for 12 people... I have also lifted the potatoes growing in pots - these were all small urrm... 50p piece size or slightly larger.. much cleaner than the ones in the ground plus I didn't loose any - so I would do these ones again for christmas but with a bigger pot BUT tbh.. I only did it so we could have homegrown new potatoes for christmas dinner.. it to me was a bit of a waste of space!
A few in the ground had started to go rotton (maybe blight??) but some had holes and the inside was completley empty - is that those little black slugs or something else?

edited to add details of pot potattoes
It`s wait and see here. I have some large plants growing in compost bags in a greenhouse but I forgot to fleece them a couple of nights back and they got frosted
I planted mine mid september, fleeced november and nothing, they didn't even show. :'( :'( :'( ??? ;D ;D ;D
I planted in August and have enough Charlottes for Boxing Day ;D
I planted around 30 Maris Peer in August / September and they started growing fine - lots of nice and healthy topgrowth, but the first frost hit in early november and the haulms died off >:(
They were sold as Christmas potatoes, but I didn't even consider that they would be affected by the frost (first year on the lottie and didn't think to ask ::) ) but now I have a nice steady amount of new potatoes which haven't been affected by slugs or frost! :D
