Title: Potatoes Days and Heritage Potatoes
Post by: thomasb on December 10, 2007, 20:36:22
In the current Kitchen Garden Magazine there is an offer on coloured heritage potatoes such as Salad Blue and Burgundy Red. I have not tried these but they look very interesting.
For the last few years I have got my potatoes at the Gloucestershire potato days that take place each January at Dundry Nurseries in Cheltenham.

Does anyone know if these potato days this January will have these heritage potatoes? If not, I might get them through the Alan Romans offer in the magazine.

thanks,
Thomas

I've grown Salad blue and Burgundy red. All you need is a nice white fleshed spud then you could have a patriotic mash.
Ryton Potato Day had them a few of years ago, supplied by Solanum (?) the company that supplies Waitrose. Last year, they didn't have any last couple of years (think Solanum stopped sponsoring the event?).
We grew from seed potatoes. Is the offer for microplants?

Beware that the East Anglian day is near impossible to get to by public transport. There are no buses and the nearest train station is a £10 taxi journey.

VP - I have been thinking of going to the Ryton Potato day for the last two years, not made it yet, I thought I would earmark it again for this year - is it a good day, worth going to? my problem with potatoes is that I would like to grow a small quantity of a number of varieties and when looking in catalogues etc they are all sold in 3k bags

That won't be a problem. We tended to get between 2 and 5 seed potatoes for each variety we wanted to grow!

Good tip Cambourne7.

Susiebelle - It'll be a first time for me as well - I was marking it up on my calendar for next year, so just wanted to pass the date on. I've heard it's very good.

Cambourne7 & multiveg - thanks for answering susiebelle's question before I got the chance to :-*
