Help needed please ! I have a protected birdfeeder which is fine for tits and goldfinches but the mesh is too small for Sparrows to get in to feed, the unprotected feeder I have gets mobbed by starlings and the poor sparrows don't get a look in there either :( Anyone managed to keep them all happy???
no idea what you can do to protect the sparrows. They are ground feeders. Now n then I see a sparrow trying to get to a feeder but they are mostly feeding from under the feeders. You can buy one of them cages that is put on the ground so thata preditors can't get in and the ground feeding birds can get to the seed. Look at CJWildbirdfood website and you will see what i mean.
;)
I suppose I am lucky/unlucky I do not get many Starlings. The Sparrows are very happy feeding on the ground and on the feeders with sunflower hearts and the mesh peanut feeder.

If your sparrows are anything like mine you need a cushion for them to bounce on at landing.

:) In my garden House Sparrows prefer Budgie seed ie millet which is put on the bird table and Robin seed and insect mix also on the bird table, then sunflower hearts, then peanuts in feeders, they don't ground feed in my garden unless they are desperate, then the Sparrowhawk gets them :(

photo taken through kitchen window, Starlings also like Robin food. ::) If you throw a few raisins out the Starlings will go for those first and the Sparrows get a look in/ shades x
our sparrows feed at the fat balls and peanut feeders with the tits, mind you, the tits do object and try to chase them away ;D
thanks all for help, we trimmed the perches on one feeder and now the starlings can't get a grip but the sparrows and tinies can ;D ;D
