Title: Decorating Delemma's
Post by: kenkew on November 28, 2007, 19:12:02
Got offered a jobbo last week to wallpaper a couple of rooms. He gave me the sizes and I said OK. What he didn't say was that things were not all that straight forward. I did both rooms in 5 days but not without the help of Pythagoras and friends.... :-\

Interesting job.

As a retired decorator, I can appreciate the problems. One thing to bear in mind is that you have to measure the maximum girth and height of the room when ordering paper.

One interesting job I had once was papering a room with upright timbers in the walls. Most were OK, going from floor to ceiling (it just meant carefully measuring the width of the timber to get the pattern in register). One timber, however, started 18 inches above the floor up to the ceiling. That involved hanging the paper upwards (start at the bottom) and you have to get it straight and upright. I'm glad I've retired now.

I have just started decorating my bungalow. Have finished the 2 smallest rooms, loo and bathroom. I have a high fixed cistern, couldn't get the steps near enough cos of the loo so I balanced with one foot on the steps and the other on the window sill, that was OK until the steps started sliding, didn't know I could nearly do the splits ;D. .Had to remove bathroom door last night as it won't go over the new carpet, just going to try my hand at taking a little off the bottom of the door. Wish me luck!!

I really do wish you luck with that lorna! OH and I spent the evening after our new living room carpet was fitted taking 'a little bit' off the bottom of the door. took us over 5 HOURS to do it and the air was positively blue by the time we'd finished. thankfully it was hung on those lift-off hinges otherwise I think we would have resorted to shaving the carpet ;D

have yet to tackle complicated papering around doors and windows. so far we (as in the royal we ::)) have just stuck to papering one wall that has no doors or windows. we did hang the paper horizontally though, and that was just loads of fun...

;D Had to make sure and lock FRONT door, no bathroom door and had to shower before going for BP check. Have had the belt sander going on the door but will have another go tomorrow as it is my evening out. Only emulsioned the bathroom but papered the loo. Next thing is the lounge, always paper that. One thing as I am on my own nobody can hear my few choice words when things don't go right :)

I always used to paper, love the end result. But its become so expensive now....I paint instead :(

Expensive is right, the paper I 'played' with cost £55 a roll....! To be honest, I over estimated on the 'wierd' room and had close to 2 rolls left over. Not ashamed of that because I know just how easy it is to ruin a whole drop on such a complicated room. ( Been doco'ing for 40+ years).
The second room I had less than half a drop left...now that's close, veryyy close!
(Got £320 for both, so it was worth getting the slide-rule out for.)

Just finished painting a cinder-block cellar today...that stuff is a nightmare to paint....get £120 for that one, 2 days and £90 worth of paint...which I didn't buy!

Got to make from scratch a large set of shelving, start next week. The wood is antique oak with a fungal attack showing deep dark graining, luverly stuff....and has to be self standing! Hope I get it right.....! I'm hoping for a few off-cuts, too!   :D
