What is the proprietary name for Potato Flour/Starch??
Tim,
Came to me whilst emptying my compost heap!
Fécule.
At least thats what we called it in college!! ;D
DP
That's what we call it here in France - thought it was just a French name though. ??? Maybe its the same in the UK.
I always think of both potato flour & potato starch as farina despite the fact they are completely different products with different uses.
A step nearer, but not the name I was after.
And I did not realise that farina could be made from potatoes.
Or that starch is a different thing. Learning!
Arrowroot?
Sorry - just looked it up. Arrowroot comes from tubers but not spuds.
Potato flour actually tastes of potato, potato starch on the other hand has no taste, it is more like cornstarch(cornflour)
Neither to be confused woth POM!!

Potato starch, slightly unsurprisingly, is made from potato starch whereas potato flour is made from the whole potato. Brands? Haven't a clue.
Why do you ask Tim??
Jitterbug
Because I HATE to be robbed of my memory!!
It was a regular store cupboard feature for years & I really should be able to remember.
Kudzu or Katakuriko do anything for you Tim??
Names, no - but your reply does!!
......so,,,,,,we're thinking potato starch, a thickening agent?
Welcome home, Lishka!
Not really - I know that the starch is used in proprietary products, but I have only used the flour.
I give up. It was just an exercise in getting back that everyday brand name that now eludes me.
Thank you all!!

What is the proprietary name for Potato Flour/Starch??

Hello Timbo!
As you're thinking years back, what about the old manufacturers of gravy salt (remember that?)...Burdells & Comptons, I think....any chance they also made your potato whatsit?
Potato starch is not limited to just being a thickening agent. If potato starch is used in baking it gives a lighter texture without affecting the flavour whereas potato flour gives a heavier texture & can quite drastically affect the flavour.
You are not thinking of Monikie Mills Farina (potato flour) are you Tim

Incredible what one can dig out of the cupboard!!
Still no I'm afraid. But good for the brain cells?
how far back are we to go Tim as there are a number of proprietary brands around :-\
Was it a store cupboard in the UK - or when you were living abroad?
No idea but I've been Googling on your behalf ;D
Interesting fact: Bisto is in fact made from potato flour
Another interesting Fact: An oriental food company 'FUNG LUNG CHING KEE' make it
Yet another one: It is used to make eye-shadow beauty products!
I really must get off my computer & do something productive today ::)
How far? At least 30 years.
Where? Little Rissington!
Rakusens or Triple Lion mean anything?
Oooh Tim, what have you started! I've been googling too.....have a look at this place...pick a category, any category..

I looked a various food-related sites, then at the apothecary section....ah, those were the days when you bought olive oil at the chemist's shop ::)...Bed Bug Poison and a nice jar of leeches, anyone??
But, back on topic...Colman's starch, howzabout that?
Some things improve!!
No hits yet - it was probably a figment of my imagination?
