Since this country is no longer a christian country, Wintervall is what we all have to call the mid-winter festivities, so that the politically correct people don't get shirty about christians being racist.

Baaaaa Since when has this country not been a Christian country? The basic religion of the United Kingdom is Christianity.
Why do we have to accommodate all other religions? You would not get the equivalent tolerance in, for example Saudi Arabia, and so it would seem Sudan.
When a daft old biddy in Sudan can face imprisonment, 40 lashes, etc for allowing her class of children to choose the name for a teddy bear. The name they chose was mohammed. Would a teacher in this country be so vilified for calling a teddy bear Jesus?

Now, I do not think Christmas should be renamed and disagree when it is although I myself do avoid the term when speaking personally but not when speaking generally - but that is because I profess not to be a Christian.
Yes, this country is still a Christian country because of the anachronism that the Anglican Church is the established church - something that Prince Charles may change when he ascends to the (also anachronistic) throne. What I totally disagree with you about though is that we should not accommodate other religions because countries like Sudan don't. If you want this country to be like Sudan, then it should behave like Sudan and be intolerant. I personally do not want to be like Sudan, and a liberal state of accommodation of all religions puts us morally above them - where I want to be. I hate all sorts of fundamentalism but because I am not a fundamentalist, I have to allow them a voice and then to disagree with them rather than not allowing them their voice in the first place. It is the same with our own rather distasteful compatriots like Nick Griffin and David Irving. I loathe them but will not censor them - that makes me better than them in my opinion, as I am sure, given the chance, they would lock me up and throw away the key.
I still think the banning of Christmas as a word is pathetic. I think it does happen but is not as widespread as some elements of the media (yes, you know which ones) make out to suit their own agenda.
Oh, could you please let me know the percentage of population that reguarly practises Christianity - possibly compared to other religions. Are yo sure this country is as Christian as you would like to believe?
Noo redclanger, not so much a humour bypass in operation ?'again', but in my case to get the wrong end of the stick. I have this innate ability to misinterpret things. I apologise to Baaaa unreservedly for my tirade, but the red rag to my bull was the term winterval for Christmas. Also I failed to read the irony in Baaaa's posting.
My plea in mitigation is that a few years ago Birmingham City Council decided to rename Christmas winterval, in order not to offend other religious groups, ie muslim, jewish, sikh, etc. The backlash came from all those communities. They were not offended, it was only the stupid PC mob that thought they might be.
We may have many anachronisms, whether it be the Royal Family, the CofE, or any other parts of the disunited kingdom.
Personally, rather that president Blair or Brown, I have a sneaking admiration for the Queen.

As a christian of the low church I think the puritan attempt to ban Christmas (1654?) was about right...
I certainly don't want to be associated with the "Yule" Bacchinalia(?) commercialistic winter solstice thing...

My 7 year old, came home from school in tears today. Since starting back in Sept. she's been wanting to be an angel in the school nativity.
But, ... as I'm sure you've already guessed, ... its been cancelled - due to bloody P.C.
I was a shepherd when I was her age (Mother still insists on bringing out the photos whenever my friends come round). And my dad can remember doing it in his day - Its tradition. Its part of Christmas.
But now ... its all gone out of the window.
WHY ?
Why can those that want to be Christian not be allowed to celebrate being Christian, without being accused of all sorts of bad stuff.
As for Wintervall (/Christmas/Eid) , wouldn't Spend-It-All be a better name ? Looking at the financial papers, people have more regard for spending money than they do of religion at this time of the year.

With church attendance declining for decades now, I couldn't agree more.
If Christianity was officially given a minority status, would there be a backlash, and would it be more respected ?
PS I dont go to church, but I know which church it is that I dont go to.

Down our way in S Wales some councils have banned eating mince pies in schools, some schools have banned Christmas parties and school plays
Lets hope these so called leaders of our community put their beliefs into practice themselves. If you don't believe in the Christmas story then please be real men and women and don't celebrate it.
I am a Christian and I attend church every week for me Christmas is a festival which gives the message of hope peace and love, and I intend to enjoy every moment of it. By the way Christmas for us Christains has already started on the 1st of Dec (Advent).

Powerspade, unbelievable, what is this country coming to? Wonder if the C ouncil had any Office parties. I just get so cross, I am almost glad my old Mum & Dad are not still alive to see what this great country of ours has come to.
Fully understand the banning of mince pies!!!! Oh and Christmas Cakes, Christmas Puddings. In fact anything that consists mainly of dried fruit. Yeuuuuurgh!!!!! ;D
