How did we manage before those blue trays came along?
So glad you're not in my Novice Class :o ;D
They look well Davy. Are you growing both blanch and pots there?..
I grow both, those shown are Pot leeks Thirhston, Yorkshire Greens and Cumbrian. My blanch leeks are being looked after by a mate at the moment. This way we keep the cost of heating down. When they get to the stage of going into the big pots we then open up the hothouse and share the heating costs.
Its an expensive game growing show leeks its not something i would encourage some one to do unless they had the time, money and someone to help with knowledge.
Leeks £1 each and i get fifty plus but only forty will go in the trenches
Admire compost £4.50 a bag i will need at least three
Admire to spray the leeks £10
Mytex £10
Trench feed £10
Then the cost of heating on top
I have to buy Tote tickets each week then my subscription on top of that.
Some outlay for a pass time.
Ah, but what's the prize money?
At our Dahlia Society, it's 50p a class!! I made nealy £50 one year (not allowing for petrol, heating, compost, feed, plants, canes, lables.....). I'm thinking of giving up the day job and turning pro!!
Isn't growing for exhibition a fantastic hobby though? Totally absorbing.
I peed myself when I won an open class for dahlias with three from two tubers I bought from Focus that year. I'd love to take it all seriously.
