Title: Apple butter
Post by: Val on November 13, 2007, 07:26:21
If you've got a lot of time this sounds a bit different. I haven't tried it  but if I had a slow cooker I'd give it a go.

I've checked out the website and it sounds delicious- but not sure about the canning bit! I am new to this preserving game, made lots of chutneys this year and have just sterilised the jars i.e dishwasher then oven, and filled jars whilst both jars and chutney are warm, the canning instructions sounds like you have to invest in new jars, seals lids etc - how necessary is this for the Apple Butter recipe?.
I have just prepared the apple juice for an apple jelly recipe and intended using the jar method used for chutney's will it be OK?

iF YOU GIVE AS A PRESENT HOW LONG DOES IT LAST IN THE FRIDGE.........(caps lock-sorry)

Another dumb question...how do you use it? Just spread on bread or toast?

It sounds lovely Val and Tim  :D

Fattening? Nothing like as much as jam??

Keeping? Use?

"Apple butter is like a thicker and spicier version of applesauce. It is great on toast, crackers, cornbread, pancakes etc., or over ice cream. Make it as plain or as spiced-up as you like. This recipe is a good starting place. If you don't want to bother with canning, just freeze whatever apple butter you won't be using within a week."

Or with cheese & meats?

PS Cook in Cider also - or no liquid if long & slow.
