Title: 5 to 30 rods
Post by: fuchsia on November 12, 2007, 22:20:25
Hi everyone
Newbie here as well, I didn`t introduce myself when I asked about showing veg and feel very naughty lol. I had been given my five rods at the beginning of the year which I was over the moon with but 4 weeks ago I was offered a large plot that covers nearly 30 rods !! I was over the moon and accepted. Luckily it had been looked after although had been left to its own devices for a few months. Its taken 4 weeks to get back on top of it. I have a poly tunnel 20ft x 8ft and a fruit cage 60ft x 20ft, along with 3 huge beds for veg. I`m am now buried under seed catalogues getting excited about spring coming lol. When I suss out how to get photo`s on here I`ll post some !! Look forward to meeting you all and reading all your posts.

Hi and well done fushsia, it's a great feeling when you get given a plot after a long wait, and it's a good time of year to be given a plot,
quick question:- have you started making compost bins - heaps, collecting any leave for a free and good compost, putting up any waterbutts for free water, as these things will help loads next year.

PS, if you need any help with photos just ask.

windy ;) ;)

hi not sure if this will help ray.
The rod is a unit of length, equal to 5.5 yards, 11 cubits, 5.0292 metres, 16.5 feet, or 1⁄320 of a statute mile. A rod is the same length as a perch[1] and a pole. The lengths of the perch (one rod) and chain (four rods) were standardized in 1607 by Edmund Gunter.

The length is equal to the standardized length of the ox goad used by medieval English ploughmen; fields were measured in acres which were one chain (four rods) by one furlong (in the United Kingdom, ten chains).

Because the furlong was "one plough's furrow long" and a furrow was the length a plough team was to be driven without resting, the length of the furlong and the acre vary regionally, nominally due to differing soil types. In England the acre was 4,840 square yards, but in Scotland it was 6,150 square yards and in Ireland 7,840 square yards. In all three countries, fields were divided in acres and thus the furlong became a measure commonly used in horse racing, archery, and civic planning.

A sign at the City Hall in Münster, Germany noting that the bar shown is one "Prussian Half Rod" longBars of metal one rod (16.5 feet) long were used as standards of length in surveying land in the past. One example of a surveyor's rod is a one piece metal bar encased in a cylindrical canvas tube (to keep the sun from heating it and making it increase in length) with a piece of the semiprecious gemstone jasper at each end of the rod (to prevent wear of the metal bar).

The rod is still in use as a unit of measure in certain specialised fields. In recreational canoeing, maps measure portages (overland paths where canoes must be carried) in rods[citation needed]. This is thought to persist due to the rod approximating the length of a typical canoe. In the United Kingdom, the sizes of allotment gardens continue to be measured in rods. In Vermont, the default width of state and town highways and trails is three rods. (VSA Title 17 §702)

The rod was still in use as a common unit of measurement in the mid-1800s, when Henry David Thoreau used it frequently when describing distances in his work Walden.

Can I just add that the rod, pole or perch is not a unit of length, it is a unit of land measurement. The rod, pole or perch may be used for length and area interchangeably so when you get a plot of 30 rods it is unlikely to be 30 rods long but an area of 30 times a rod squared. There is no such thing as a square rod although one rod can be square. Good huh. Get diggin.

I was always under the impression that a standard allotment was 10 poles, ie 30 feet wide & 90 feet long. So you've got 3 full-size allotments! Wow!! That's a lot of digging! Have fun and mind your back.

And welcome.

Any chance of anyone expressing it in metres2 or even feet?  ??? ???

Did the plot come with poly tunnel and fruit cage or have you built those in the 4 weeks as well?

Thanks for your warm welcome everyone, it really sounds fun here lol.
Windygale I will definately be taking you up on your offer about piccy`s. I have also made an enormous compost heap out of old pallets split into several bins + 4 plastic bins full of leaves and a big wire enclosure for leaves, my plot is lined with oak trees !!
ok  Trevor, I might have got rod size wrong, in feet its 60ft wide by 160 ft long, someone let me know what the rod size is so I know how much the council will charge me lol. Hope that helps kea, can`t do metres !! As for klingon my husband is a star trek freak, DVD`s, plates, plastic phasers you name he has it !!!! I have to confess I did go to the star trek ball once but I did not dress up lol. Now you know why I have a big allotment Star lol
