some of my stored potatoes are sprouting, some have sprouts 5 inch long. it must be too warm in my shed. Its a pity it isnt planting time, it would save buying any seed potatoes
I had exactly the same thing happen. I just broke them off and moved them to a cooler place. I know what your mean about *Shame it wasn't planting time* Could have saved a few pennies ::)
Don't worry, tonights cold spell will remind them winter is still to come
gawd, I haven't even finished digging mine up yet :-[
First earlies will sprout if there is any warmth at all... Bought potatoes are cold stored at 4C.. and most are sprayed with inhibitors...
My Red Dukes and Epicure always start sprouting before Xmas the trick is to eat the earlies earliest! PFA don't usually start until March unless it is too warm..
Home Guard was noted for its long dormancy so could be held back during the war for the May gap between the last of the old and the first of the new Pots..
;D
To stop your potatoes from sprouting put an apple in with them (remember to change periodically as the apple ages).
Mine are kept in an unheated garage, but the Marfonas are sprouting, and also (though ruthlessly culled) suffer the most from internal slug chewings. Desiree and Charlotte are lasting the best so far.
I took mine home from the lottie shed and they felt like they have come out of the fridge, it shouldn't be warm in the shed this time of year, I block off the light to my shed if that makes any difference and keep them in hessian sacks, no sprouting so far. ;D ;D ;D
thanks for the replies, I have broken off the sprouts and will eat those spuds first,
Cornykev, a couple sides of my shed are protected by a brick building and at the back a hedge, inside is lined with old chipboard. perhaps thats why it feels warmer in there, lol
Simon brick walls usually hold the heat from the sun so when it cools in the evening the walls are still letting off the heat, if that makes any sense, if I'm wrong someone will come along and tell us, but I think it comes from the Victorian kitchen gardens. :-\ ;D ;D ;D
I will move them to another shed, thanks for the info cornykev
