I have 3 gooseberry bushes that were planted just this year, spring 2007. I am not sure if I need to prune them this year? They didn't really give any fruit, just a couple of berries.
If I do prune them, can I try to root the cutting sto get new bushes? Can this be done now or am I in the wrong season??
It's all so confusing the first year!!
Thanks for any help!
Yes you can strike cuttings now... get a reasonable length cut off the small leaves at the top, rub off the leaves and thorns from the bit you are going to stick in the ground... then leave alone for a year!
On the pruning just cut out any crossing dead or spindly growth... try to get to an open top/middle that looks like the bowl of a wine glass... helps reduce mildew and most importantly scratches when you pick the fruit..
;D
ah yes i knew the wineglass trick, but mine are still very small, I don't know if it is worth it?? still I might try cuttings just to propogate. Do they lose all their leaves in winter?? mine still have theirs...
Normally yes, they will shed all their leaves over Winter.. you haven't killed it they are deciduos!!
;D
